Cousins.
The 40th Annual Canadian Finals Rodeo came to an exciting conclusion on Championship Sunday at Rexall Place in Edmonton, Alberta with two sets of cousins among those sharing the spotlight.
Clayton Moore of Pouce Coupe, British Columbia closed out his CFR run with a 4.4 in the final round to clinch his first ever Canadian title.
“I just wanted to get a good start and make a solid run,” Moore stated moments after receiving the 2013 Championship Steer Wrestling buckle. And Moore tipped his hat to his partner, 2012 Steer Wrestling Horse of the Year, Pistol.
Less than an hour later the 32 year old bull dogger’s cousin, Timber Moore, from Aubrey, Texas roped and tied his final calf in 8.3 seconds to ‘seal the deal’ in the tie-down roping. The tall lanky Texan rode, Stick, the tie-down horse belonging to timed event icon Curtis Cassidy, throughout the finals.
“I met the Cassidy family a few years back. I often stay with them when I’m rodeoing in Canada, and have been fortunate to be able to ride one of their outstanding horses.” Enroute to his second Wrangler NFR, Moore confirmed that he will, once again, be riding Stick for the ten days in Las Vegas.
The Moores weren’t the only cousins celebrating on Championship Sunday in Edmonton. Nineteen year old team roping sensation Kolton Schmidt of Barrhead, Alberta teamed with 2011 Team Roping (heeler) Champion, Tyrel Flewelling, to capture the title in a close race that saw the pair hold off the fast closing duo of Clay Ullery and Matt Fawcett. Ullery and Fawcett won the aggregate by being the only team to rope all six of their steers.
“This is a dream come true and something Tyrel and I have worked really hard to accomplish,” Schmidt said. The Oklahoma college student went on to credit both his father, Ronald, and grandfather, Leonard, with being the mentors who led him to the success he enjoyed on the final day of the CFR. Flewelling echoed his partner’s comments. “My dad (Glen) has turned back more steers than you can count over the years, but as good or better a coach is my Mom. My parents, and my wife Carla, along with the Schmidt family, have been a big part of my success.”
The other member of the Schmidt family, and youngest of the four cousins to claim CFR titles, was 15 year old steer rider Kagen Schmidt. The 2012 Steer Riding Champ had already claimed his second title as the steer riding wrapped up on Saturday night at Rexall Place.
Other newly crowned Canadian Champions included Matt Lait of Cayley, Alberta in the bareback riding; Rylan Geiger of Bracken, Saskatchewan in the saddle bronc event, Oelrichs, South Dakota barrel racer, Lisa Lockhart, who captured her fourth barrel racing crown; and Chad Besplug of Claresholm, Alberta, who battled his way to his second Canadian bull riding win.
Additional winners were All Around, Travis Reay of Mayerthorpe, Alberta; High Point, Morgan Grant of Granton, Ontario; Novice Saddle Bronc, Zeke Thurston and Novice Bareback Champion, Kody Lamb of Sherwood Park, Alberta.
The top stock awards of the 2013 CFR went to Kesler Rodeo’s outstanding bareback horse, Western Star, Vold Rodeo Company’s saddle bronc sensation Eclypse and Big Stone Rodeo’s exceptional bull, Pop Evil.
