The rodeo community is saddened to hear about the passing of stock contractor and Hall of Fame cowboy Bruce Flewelling.

Bruce Flewelling’s love of rodeo was evident in a lifetime of committment to the sport - as a wild cow milker, pick-up man and stock contractor. Bruce also enjoyed helping rodeo youth at the high school rodeo level. He often give his time to help a young cowboy get that “first horse” under his belt to help build their confidence.

A horse trader at heart, Bruce was always on the lookout for a “good prospect” and at the stock contractor level. Among the noteable stock to wear the Flewelling brand over the years are American Trip, British Block, Mr. Burke, Red Sky and Cheadle to name a few.

Bruce worked as a pick-up man for several contractors including Cockx and Hook Rodeo, Northcott Rodeo, Big Country Rodeo, Vold Rodeo and Big Stone Rodeo. He also handled pick-up man duties at the Calgary Stampede for 15 years and at the CFR four times. Bruce was one of the instructors at the first pick-up man school held in Canada.

Bruce held a sub-contractor card for 20+ years, helping round out the stock for several different outfits in the CPRA. Most recently, he was part of the Outlaw Buckers Rodeo organization.

During his years as a competitor, Bruce won the Canadian cow milking championship seven times, the Alberta Circuit cow milking championship seven times, and was a two-time Calgary Stampede cow milking champion.

As well, Bruce was an auctioneer and brand inspector. He enjoyed a long career at the Calgary Stockyards.

The CPRA would like to extend condolences to Bruce's wife Iloe, and to his family, colleagues and friends.
