Bud Butterfield was the middle sibling of the Butterfield brothers. He was born July 19, 1930. Bud joined the Cowboys' Protective Association in 1956 and won his first championship that same year. From then until his retirement in 1964, he was never lower than third in the year-end standings
Bud still holds of the record for the most Canadian steer wrestling titles at six and is co-holder (with Dave Penner) of most consecutive steer wrestling championships, each with three.
Bud won the steer decorating and steer wrestling at the Calgary Stampede four times. Much of Bud's success was due to the team of steer wrestling horses the Butterfields owned - Spud and Twist.
Bud retired from Canadian Professional Rodeo in 1964 and was inducted into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in 1996.
* A Private Family Graveside Service is being held on Saturday, January 26, 2019 and a Celebration of Bud’s Life will be held at a later date.
* Memorial donations are gratefully accepted to S.T.A.R.S. or the Edmonton Rodeo Cowboy Benevolent Foundation.
