Champions Crowned at Wrangler National Finals Rodeo

Zeke Thurston - World ChampionDec 14, 2019 l Las Vegas, NV
For Immediate Release

Zeke Thurston is first and foremost a winner.

And he proved it again at the 61st edition of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. In the final go round, the Big Valley, Alberta saddle bronc rider posted an 88.5 score on C5 Rodeo’s Kitty Whistle to split 3/4/5 in the round to add $11,141 to his round earnings. And Thurston added a fourth place average payout of $31,431 to give him total WNFR earnings of $170,064. His overall season total of $347,055 reflected his domination as his margin of victory over second place man Brody Cress was $61,000.

“I don’t know if I have words for how I feel right now. I wanted this one even more that I wanted that first one,” the 24 year-old second generation bronc rider admitted. “I’ve had more fun this year than I ever have. This is awesome, just awesome.”

To say that Zeke Thurston has already fashioned a storybook career is to understate the situation dramatically. In 2008 he was the Canadian Steer Riding Champion and followed that up with a Novice Saddle Bronc title in 2013. Then there were two Contract Act of the Year honours while a member of The Thurston Gang. He was the World Champion Bronc Rider in 2016, Canadian Champion in 2019, collected three Calgary Stampede $100,000 cheques and wins at virtually every important rodeo on either side of the 49th parallel.

And now the biggest prize of all—the coveted gold buckle emblematic of a World title for the second time. Thurston’s double win—Canadian and World titles in the same year—mark the first time that has happened since Taos Muncy accomplished that feat in 2011.

It was also a very good week for Thurston’s traveling partners—the other two Canadians in the saddle bronc riding, Jake Watson and Dawson Hay. Watson, the Hudson’s Hope, British Columbia bronc rider was second in the final round with an 89.5 point ride on Sankey Pro Rodeo and Phenom Genetics Marquee for $20,730. He finished sixth in the average, won over $127,000 during the ten days of the Finals and checked in at $236,406 for the year, good for sixth overall. WNFR rookie Dawson Hay completed the Canadian trio’s spectacular week as he was part of that 3/4/5 final round split with Thurston and Ryder Wright, and added an eighth place average cheque of $6346 for an NFR total of $97,435 and season earnings of $197,747 good for seventh place.

Haven Meged - 2019 World Tie-Down ChampionClayton Biglow was not to be denied. The Clements, California bareback rider came to the WNFR with a commanding lead, increased that lead in the first nine go-rounds at the Thomas and Mack Arena and finished it off in the tenth round by tying the arena record he set a year ago; this time the 93 point score was recorded on the Canadian Bareback Horse of the Year, Northcott-Macza’s Stevie Knicks. The $26,230 first-place cheque, coupled with his win in the average ($67,269) gave the four time qualifier a record season total of $425,843.

2019 Canadian Champion and five time WNFR qualifier Orin Larsen rode Stace Smith Pro Rodeo’s Junior Bonner to finish fourth in the final go-round ($11,000) and held on to fourth place in the average as well for another $31,731 to bring his season total to $296,403, second only to Biglow.

The third of the Canadian bareback riders, Cadogan, Alberta cowboy, Clint Laye was out of the money in round ten but rode all ten of his horses and finished 6th in the average for $16,500 to take home almost $79,000 at his second WNFR and a season total of $170,415.

It came down to one tenth of a second to decide the Tie Down Roping Championship of the World. The amazing Miles City, Montana rookie, Haven Meged, prevailed with a season total of $246,013, just $1182 ahead of 2013 World Champion Shane Hanchey. Hanchey split the final round with a 7.1 second run with Texan Adam Gray, each man collecting $23,480. If Hanchey had been a tenth of a second faster or Gray a tenth slower, the outright winner’s cheque of $26,230 would have been enough to give the Louisiana superstar his second title. The Meged-Hanchey 1-2 finish was the exact reverse of the Canadian Championship battle the two staged just over a month ago at CFR 46 in Red Deer. Meged is just 21 years-old and is just months removed from having been the World Collegiate Rodeo Champion.

It was a coronation in the bull riding. Sage Kimzey had set his sights on tying the great Jim Shoulders’ record of six consecutive world titles and the 25 year-old Oklahoma sensation did it with authority. Kimzey was 88 points on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s River Monster to win second in the round, finish first in the average and put a ribbon on a season that saw him top $480,796 in earnings, another record.

2016 Canadian Champion, Jordan Hansen enjoyed his finest hour at this Finals as he topped the field in round 10 with an 88.5 point go round win on Four Star Rodeo’s Hell Hound. The $26,230 payday, along with an eighth place average cheque of $6346, gave the Ponoka, Alberta bull rider an NFR total of $100,044 and a season total of $214.792.

Round ten of the barrel racing event included some heart-stopping moments that saw defending Champion, Hailey Kinsel-Lockwood, who came into the final round in first place, hit a barrel to finish out of the money. But seven placings through the week, including two round wins, gave the Cotulla, Texas cowgirl $141,153 in NFR earnings for a grand total of $290,020, enough for her second title. Average winner, Ivy Conrado-Saebens was the picture of consistency throughout the Finals, and the only competitor to run clean over ten rounds with 138.44/10 for $264,673 overall and the reserve World title.

Ty Erickson - PRCA Hubbell photoIt was third time lucky for Helena, Montana steer wrestler Ty Erickson. The lanky bull dogger came to the Thomas and Mack Arena twice before in the lead and was unable to seal the deal. This time it came down to the final round for the six time WNFR qualifier. While Erickson did not place in round 10, he clocked a 4.4 to maintain fifth spot in the Average ($22,846) to win his first World title with $234,491 in total, just $17,130 ahead of fellow Montanan, Bridger Chambers. The Average win went to Cross Plains, Texas bulldogger Matt Reeves. Two time and reigning Canadian Champion Scott Guenthner pocketed $46,102 for his 2019 WNFR efforts for a 12th place $148,853 overall.

Determination of the 2019 Team Roping Champions also came down to the final round with Oklahoma’s Clay Smith taking home his second consecutive World Heading title. The five time WNFR qualifier, and his partner Jade Corkill, Fallon, Nevada, placed in six of ten rounds ($118,307 total NFR earnings) with Smith earning a season total of $268,819. But it was Throckmorton, Texas heeler, Wesley Thorpe, who enjoyed his first World Championship with an impressive $249,180 for the season, 161,884 of which came from earnings garnered at this year’s Finals with California heading partner, Cody Snow. Thorpe and Snow’s six placings over the course of the Finals, including a 4.4 second-place round ten run, gave them the Average win and $62,269 each.

The Canadian saddle bronc riders might be wishing every night could be Friday the 13th. All three qualifiers from north of the 49th parallel placed in round 9 with reigning Canadian Champion and 2016 World Champion Zeke Thurston of Big Valley, Alberta marking an outstanding 91 points on Vold Rodeo Co.’s Sun Glow to add to his already considerable World leader earnings. Wildwood, Alberta WNFR rookie, Dawson Hay, put up 88 points for second place money while British Columbia cowboy, Jake Watson added a fifth place cheque with an 83.5 point effort. Tonight’s round win makes the fifth round win in a row for the Canadians and the sixth overall (three by Thurston) at this year’s Finals. With just one round to go, the second generation superstar has topped the $304,000 mark in season earnings and holds a commanding $43,000 lead over second place man and 2017 World Champion Ryder Wright. The Big Valley talent also occupies 4th place in the average standings while Wright is out of the average after what has been a tough week for the Utah man.

Thurston was as proud of the fact that all three Canadians won money on this night as he was about his win. “We all travel together and I was really happy we all qualified to be here. We kicked butt all season and we’re doing it here as well. Dawson struggled a little at the first of the week but I just told him to ride broncs, that’s what got us here and he looks pretty comfortable now. And Jake’s won two rounds and we all know how good he is.”

2016 Canadian Bull Riding Champion Jordan Hansen picked up a third place $15,653 cheque with a tremendous 88 point performance aboard Silver Creek Pro Rodeo’s Chaos Ghost. It was the Ponoka cowboy’s third placing of the week and moved him over the $45,000 plateau in WNFR earnings.

‘I feel it’s been something of a sub-par week for me here,” Hansen commented. “I started the week well but kind of went through a cold spell until tonight. It was nice to get this one rode.”

The round win went to Crockett, Texas cowboy Boudreaux Campbell with a 91 score while WNFR rookie Daylon Swearingen rode the Calgary Stampede’s 2018 Canadian Bull of the year, Night Moves, to a 90 point second place finish. And Sage Kimzey, who stands on the brink of being crowned World Champion for the sixth consecutive time, was bucked off for just the second time of this Finals.

Ty Erickson - PRCA Hubbell photoThe steer wrestling got real interesting on Friday the 13th and will go right down to the final round for a winner to be declared. Helena, Montana cowboy, Ty Erickson helped his cause Friday night with a rock solid 3.6 second run. The injection of the $26,231 first place cheque moved the six time WNFR qualifier to first place in the World and fifth in the Average. Tyler Waguespack took a no-time and though he still sits fourth in the world standings fell from first to eleventh in the average with the miss. J.D. Struxness who had taken over the lead 24 hours earlier broke the barrier to be 13.3 in round nine and now sits second in the world but like Waguespack is well back in the average at 13th spot. Stetson Jorgensen and Tyler Pearson are both contenders to overtake Erickson in what will be a dramatic final round.

Another race that tightened up on the second last night of the 2019 WNFR was the Team Roping where Kaleb Driggers and Junior Nogueira blazed their way to a 3.6 and the first place $26,230 cheque. The go round win moved Driggers to second place in the world standing while Nogueira, the 2017 All-Around Champion of the World, has moved to number one in the heeling standings. 2019 Canadian Champions Matt Sherwood and Hunter Koch took a no-time and fell all the way to ninth in the average.

Jake Brown of Cleveland, Texas posted an 89.5 on J Bar J’s Blessed Assurance to win round nine in the bareback riding. Prior to Friday night, Brown had cashed only one cheque, a $2200 split of 6th in go round seven. Clayton Biglow turned in an 88.5 score on Vold Rodeo’s Mucho Dinero to split ¾ in the round. The Californian sits first overall with a $79,000 cushion over his nearest pursuer, Canadian Orin Larsen. Both Larsen (85.5 points) and fellow Canadian Clint Laye (83 points) were out of the money in the Friday night go-round.

The tie-down roping round 9 win belonged to Stephenville, Texas hand, Marty Yates who posted a 7.0 second run, his fastest this week (and fastest of this Finals so far) and his second round win of the week. The six time WNFR qualifier sits third in the World but is out of the Average standings. Louisiana roper, Shane Hanchey, remains atop the World standings with $209,927 overall but the reigning Canadian Champion is down in the Average in seventh spot. Nebraska roper, Riley Pruitt is second with $203,599 and is fifth in the all-important Average. Three additional competitors, Haven Meged, Tyson Durfey and Tuf Cooper, who sit first, second and third respectively in the Average, could also take a run at the 2019 World title, depending on how the final round unfolds.

Weatherford, Texas barrel racer, Stevi Hillman enjoyed her second payday of the week and she did so in style with a 13.56 second run - the fastest of the Finals to date - good for the round 9 win. Defending Champion and World leader, Hailey Kinsel-Lockwood, continued her bid for a second World title as she turned in a 13.64 for second place on the night. The Cotulla, Texas cowgirl remains the overall standings leader and moved up two spots from fifth to third in the Average.

Canada Night Was Memorable For More Than Just Canadians

Madison MacDonad - Canada NightDec 12, 2019 l Las Vegas, NV
For Immediate Release

On Canada Night, it didn’t take the Canadians long to make their presence known.

After the Canadian National Anthem was performed by stock contractor Wayne Vold, and entertainers Nicki Flundra, Madison MacDonald and Piper Yule wowed the 18,000 fans jammed into the Thomas and Mack Arena, it was time to rodeo.

And while there was excitement throughout the night and great performaces from several of the Canadian competitors, on this night they saved the best for the last.

Just moments after Utah bull rider Stetson Wright who leads the All-Around standings was 93.5 points, five time World Champion Bull Rider Sage Kimzey went a half point better with a spectacular 94 point ride on a Bull of the Year - Powder River Rodeo’s SweetPro’s Bruiser. There are those WNFR moments that people will talk about for years and that ride will be one of them as a great bull and one of the greatest bull riders of all-time both brought their A game and brought the Thomas and Mack crowd to their feet. Kimzey has ridden seven of eight and sits at a mind boggling $390,000 in season earnings with two rounds and the average still potentially to be factored in. But this one was special.

Sage Kimzey - D Hubbell photo“This is a matchup I’ve been looking forward to for a long time,” the 2019 CFR qualifier admitted. “I’ve watched Bruiser grow up in rodeo and I knew one day we’d go head to head. But when I looked down during the ride and saw my left foot alongside my riding hand I knew this was the moment of truth. It was either going to be one of the great moments in bull riding history or just another buckoff.”

And he was right. On Canada night, on Retro night, it was Sage Kimzey’s night.

2016 Canadian Champion Jordan Hansen from Ponoka, Alberta was unable get by a tough draw, Harper and Morgan Rodeo’s Hot and Ready.

The north of 49 carma was very much in evidence in the bronc riding as the all-Canadian matchup of Jake Watson and the Calgary Stampede’s outstanding Stampede Warrior resulted in 89.5 points for the round win, Watson’s second in four nights and the 4th go round win in a row for Canadian bronc riders. The win boosted the Hudsons Hope, British Columbia cowboy’s WNFR winnings to $83,616, moving him to fifth in the average and seventh place overall.

“It’s pretty cool to win Canada Night on a Canadian horse,” the soft spoken cowboy acknowledged. “I knew there’d be a lot of people cheering for me. This is our night and that’s kind of how we go at it.”

2018 PRCA Bronc Riding Rookie of the Year, Dawson Hay checked in with an 86.5 point 4/5/6 split and world standings leader Zeke Thurston was 84 points in the round. Though Thurston was out of the money, he maintained his $16,000 lead over Ryder Wright. The difference, however, is in the average where the 2016 world title holder sits fourth with Wright a distant twelfth with just two rounds remaining.

Cadogan, Alberta’s Clint Laye was the second man out in the bareback riding and put together an 86 point ride on Beutler and Sons’ Bar Talk to split sixth place in round eight while Manitoba cowboy Orin Larsen was just out of the money with an 85.5 point effort on Stace Smith Pro Rodeo’s Mr. Harry. Meanwhile, at the top of the board the number one man, Californian Clayton Biglow extended his lead and is getting close to “can’t be caught” territory as he was 90 points (or better) for the fourth time this week, this time on Frontier Rodeo’s Showstomper. The gap between Biglow and the second place Larsen is now $62,000 and Biglow also leads the money-machine-Average with Larsen fifth in that stat. And the Canadian horses insisted on their day in the sun as well with Northcott-Macza’s Spilled Perfume dispatching Steven Dent before the horn and Kesler Rodeo’s Candy Smile carrying four-time World Champion Kaycee Field to a split of second and third with 87.5 points.

Jake Watson - Hubbell photoIn the team roping, there was a split at the top of the board. Kaleb Driggers and heeling partner Junior Nogueira posted a 4.3 seconds and that time was matched by 2018 CFR qualifiers Brenten Hall and Chase Tryan. Clay Smith and Jade Corkill continue to lead the world while 2019 Canadian Champions Matt Sherwood from Pima, Arizona and Hunter Koch of Vernon, Texas put up a 5.1 that was out of the money and dropped them one spot to third in the average.

There was a three way split in the tie down roping. Tyler Milligan, Riley Pruitt and Cooper Martin were the trio at the top of the board with 7.5 second runs, while reigning and four time Canadian Champion Shane Hanchey of Sulphur, Louisiana continues to lead the world in a race that can best be described as wide open.

The steer wrestling race remains a battle mainly between defending Champion, Tyler Waguespack, Gonzales, Louisiana and Helena, Montana’s Ty Erickson. While neither man placed in Thursday night’s round (Erickson was 5.9 and Waguespack was 4.9) both competitors are in good shape heading into the last two performances. Thurston and Get Smart Live Up to the Hype

Zeke Thurston - Dan Hubbell PRCA photoDec 11, 2019 l Las Vegas, NV
For Immediate Release

It was the night of the full moon. And weird stuff happened.

Some strange trips. A couple of re-rides. Steers that wouldn’t take the fall. And some Canadians that were apparent victims of the lunar forces.

But one matchup that was not impacted by the strangeness of the night was the one that pitted a Canadian and World Champion cowboy against a Canadian and World Champion bucking horse. Reigning Canadian and 2016 World titleist Zeke Thurston met up with an old friend in Northcott-Macza’s Get Smart, the 2019 winner of Best Bronc titles on both sides of the 49th parallel. It was the dream matchup and the dream came true as the 92.5 score was just a half point off the arena record. The $26,230 first place cheque kept the second generation talent in fourth place in the very lucrative average and extended his overall lead to $16,000 over season leader Ryder Wright who was second in the round with 88.5 points. It was Wright’s best showing in what has been a tough week for the Utah man as he is in a 10/11 split in the average.

“I don’t even know how much money I’ve won on Get Smart but it’s a bunch,” Thurston said of the 17 year-old rock star gelding. “I’ve never been on another horse like him. He’s tiny, maybe 800 pounds, but he’s strong and he’s proud and things gotta go right for you to ride him but when they do you can win big.”

Orin Larsen - Dan Hubbell photoIt was the third go-round win in a row for Canadian bronc riders and fourth in the seven rounds. Thurston has two of those first place finishes.

Bareback rider Orin Larsen had to get on two horses on this night and combined with Big Stone Rodeo’s Mayhem for a 90 point ride that moved the Manitoban all the way to 4th place in the average. He remains in second place in the world standings. Californian Clayton Biglow mastered a spinner, Rafter G Rodeo’s Ankle Biter, to the tune of 91.5 points to extend his lead atop the season standings leaderboard. It was Biglow’s third 90 plus point ride of the seven rounds to date as he sits first in the average and leads the second place Larsen by $60,000 in the battle for world supremacy.

In a bull riding go-round that saw 12 of the15 bull riders make premature departures from the backs of bovines, Sage Kimzey went about the business of being Sage Kimzey. The five time World Champion inched closer to another title as he bested Cervi Championship Rodeo’s Smoke Wagon for 90 points and the win. The first place $33,000 cheque (including ground money) gives the Strong City, Oklahoma superstar $363,000 and a virtually insurmountable lead in his pursuit of that sixth gold buckle. He also leads the average as he has ridden six of seven bulls at the Thomas and Mack Arena.

Sage Kimzey2016 Canadian Champion, Jordan Hansen, bucked off his third in a row as he fell victim to Andrews Rodeo’s Velocity. The Ponoka cowboy still has amassed over $30,000 in earnings so far at this 61st WNFR.

Despite finishing just out of the money with a 4.2 second run, Louisiana bulldogger Tyler Waguespack maintained his hold on both the World and Average leads. The two time and defending World Champion has $177,925 in overall earnings, just $3500 ahead of Ty Erickson, his closest adversary. Erickson, however, sits eighth in the average. Two time Canadian Champion, Scott Guenthner, had a challenging steer with the result, an 11.8 on the scoreboard clock, dropping the Provost, Alberta cowboy to seventh in the World and eleventh in the average.

On a night with quite a range of money-making tie-down roping runs, Tyler Milligan, Pahuska, Oklahoma, earned the win with a 7.5 second run. Still on top of the World Standings is reigning Canadian Champion, Shane Hanchey ($209,927) though the Sulphur, Louisiana roper was forced to go to a second rope after missing his first throw, which kept him ninth in the average (one hole out of the lucrative average payout). Rookie roping sensation, Haven Meged, Miles City, Montana, is still number one in the average with four time World Champion, Tuf Cooper right behind.

Defending World Champion Hailey Kinsel-Lockwood posted a shiney 13.60 second run for her fifth cheque of the Finals and her first round win at this year’s WNFR. The injection of $26,230 helped the Cotulla, Texas cowgirl maintain her first place position in the World Standings with $253,212 in overall earnings. Third place cowgirl Emily Miller ran a clean 13.94 to finish out of the money but stayed second in the average. 2017 World Champion, Nellie Miller kept the pressure on by clocking 13.79 - good for a share of 3-4 in the round. The Cottonwood, California barrel racer remains in a strong position, fourth in the World and fourth in the all-important average.

Team ropers, header Cody Snow of Los Olivos, California and heeling partner, Wesley Thorp of Throckmorton, Texas were a blazing 3.6 seconds to win the seventh round. Canadian Champions Matt Sherwood and Hunter Koch picked up a fifth place cheque, their fourth payday of the week, with a 7.5 second run to stay in second place in the average though they are well off the pace in the overall title chase. Clay Smith of Broken Bow, Oklahoma and Jade Corkill of Fallon, Nevada continue to lead the world standings with three rounds remaining.

For Immediate Release

Dawson Hay had watched his Canadian buddies Zeke Thurston and Jake Watson win go rounds at this Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and figured he might as well take a turn in the spotlight. The Wildwood, Alberta WNFR rookie got the job done on Mo Betta Rodeo’s Sue City Sue for an 88.5 and the $26,230 first place cheque.

“Yeah, it’s pretty cool that all three of us have won go-rounds now,” Hay acknowledged. “Those guys are as happy for me that I won as they are when they win themselves and I’m just as happy for them.” Hay had high praise for the horse that carried him to his first WNFR buckle. “I got on that horse at Cody (Wyoming) and got the win there so I was pretty happy to have her. With this pen of horses everybody has a chance every night and I couldn’t be more excited.”

World leader Zeke Thurston and second place man, Ryder Wright both took no scores in the round, leaving the Big Valley, Alberta bronc rider in fourth place in the average with three members of the Utah Wright clan as his closest pursuers. Thurston sits at $251,000, with Ryder at $241,000, Rusty at $195,000 and Spencer at $179,000 after a night that surprisingly saw all four of the top guns finish out of the money.

Caleb BennettA trio of cowboys took the victory lap in the bareback riding. Utah’s Caleb Bennett, Texan Tilden Hooper and season leader, Clayton Biglow of Clements, California made the circuit of Las Vegas’ Thomas and Mack Arena after their 89.5 point rides on Tuesday night. Bennett’s performance was on the Calgary Stampede’s eight year-old gelding You See Me.

“I think tonight that horse had a great trip and it all worked out.” Bennett grinned. “This will be my first time to South Point (the nightly buckle presentations) so I’m looking forward to that.”

Canadian Orin Larsen kept his championship aspirations in play as he posted an 87.5 on Calgary’s Arbitrator Joe for a 5/6 split and a $5500.00 cheque. The Manitoba cowboy sits in second place in the world standings and continued his climb up the average rankings, moving to eighth place as Biglow continues to sit first overall ($34,000 ahead of Larsen) and first in the average.

Two time Canadian Finals qualifiers Riley and Brady Minor claimed top spot in the team roping in the sixth round with a 4.0. The Ellensburg, Washington brother combination cashed their fourth cheque of the week and sit fourth in the average and third in the world standings. 2019 Canadian Champions Matt Sherwood of Pima Arizona and Texas cowboy Hunter Koch rebounded from a round five no time to post a 4.6 - good for fifth in the round. Clay Smith and Jade Corkill continue to hold a comfortable lead in the world standings.

Minor brothers - Dan Hubbell photoIn the bull riding, Crockett, Texas talent, Boudreaux Campbell turned in a sparkling 92.5 ride on Pete Carr Pro Rodeo’s Priefert’s Tequila Worm. 2016 Canadian Champion Jordan Hansen bucked off Stace Smith Pro Rodeo’s Torch while World leader Sage Kimzey is on cruise control as he closes in on a sixth consecutive world title. Kimzey was third in the go-round, has ridden five out of six to lead the average and has a $114,000 lead in the world standings.

Two time and defending World Champion Tyler Waguespack made a move in the steer wrestling event in Round 6. The Gonzales, Louisiana cowboy, who has placed five times to date clocked a 3.8 second run for his second round win which jumped the 29 year old to the lead in the World standings and further secured his hold on top spot in the average. Canadian Champion Scott Guenthner, Provost, Alberta was quick on the clock as well, posting a 3.9 to win a share of 2-3 with JD Struxness from Milan, Minnesota. Both men pocketed $18,192. Guenthner sits sixth in the World but is well down in the average.

Ty Harris earned his second consecutive round win with a 7.1 at the Thomas and Mack Tuesday night. The San Angelo, Texas rookie has $75,788 in Finals earnings and sits second in the World with $173,437. Unfortunately, however, the 2019 CFR contender is not in line at this point, to pick up any average money. Canadian Champion Shane Hanchey continues to hold down first in the World standings, adding a 4/5 split for $8884 in round six. Hanchey’s challenges earlier in the week see the Sulphur, Louisiana roper in ninth in the average but he enjoys a $36,000 cushion at the top of the leaderboard.

The barrel racing saw Oregon cowgirl, Amberleigh Moore running the fastest time of the Finals, 13.55 seconds, from second position on the ground to pick up her second round win. The four time WNFR qualifier has an impressive $114,923 in 2019 Finals earnings and has moved to second in the World right behind defending Champion Hailey Kinsel-Lockwood. Hot hand Emily Miller was sixth Tuesday. The Oklahoma cowgirl is third in the World and first in the average.

92 Points the Order of the Day in Round 5

Jake WatsonDec 9, 2019 l Las Vegas, NV
For Immediate Release

Jake Watson had a break-out night in the fifth round of the saddle bronc riding at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. The Hudson’s Hope, British Columbia two time finalist matched up with the outstanding Burch Rodeo’s Lunatic From Hell for a whopping 92 score, the highest of his career and his first WNFR round win.

“I didn’t know what I’d be on the scoreboard but I’m really happy with the way it turned out,” Watson noted. “I had a bad mark-out last night so I was really trying to concentrate on that. Everybody’s kind of been on the same page with missing horses out and buckoffs so hopefully we’ll have a riding contest the rest of the way.” The 26 year-old sits 7th in the average and 8th in the world standings.

Big Valley, Alberta cowboy Zeke Thurston combined with Rosser Rodeo’s Flood Tide for 82 points but finished out of the money. He sits 4th in the average and maintains a $10,000 advantage over Utah’s Ryder Wright who picked up his first cheque of the week with 85 points for fifth in the round but sits well down in the all-important average.

WNFR rookie Dawson Hay (Wildwood, Alberta) bucked off C5 Rodeo’s Kitty Whistle.

The bareback riding at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo has been, in a word, spectacular. And round five was maybe the best to date.

Season leader Clayton Biglow extended his lead atop the world standings with a 92.5 score on Pickett Pro Rodeo’s Scarlett Belle. His score was just a half point off the arena record he set one year ago. Second in the round went to Tilden Hooper with a 92 point ride on C5 Rodeo’s much decorated Virgil, the former World, Canadian and WNFR champion bareback horse. Reigning Canadian Champion Orin Larsen, coming off a 90 point go-round win 24 hours earlier, was a point higher with a 91 score to claim the $15,653 third place money. And to round out the quartet of 90 plus scores, Caleb Bennett, the Utah hand who has been to several Canadian Finals Rodeos, checked in at 90 points to win 4th place on the Canadian Bareback Horse of the Year, Northcott-Macza’s Stevie Knicks. And amazingly, four time World Champion Kaycee Field’s 88.5 was seventh in the round and out of the money.

Larsen remains in second place overall, $18,000 behind Biglow but the Clements, California cowboy holds a big advantage over the Manitoban as Biglow sits second in the average with Larsen back in 9th spot.

In the team roping, Chad Masters and Joseph Harrison went back to back with another go-round win on Monday night. The Cedar Hill, Tennessee header and his heeling partner from Marietta, Oklahoma were second in both the average and the world standings. Clay Smith and Jade Corkill continue to lead the world standings while Canadian titleists, Matt Sherwood and Hunter Koch saw their championship hopes take a big hit as they took their first no time of the finals.

Ty Harris - Dan Hubbell photoIt’s simple really. After a no time in the second go-round, 2013 World Champion and four time Canadian Champion Shane Hanchey has to be huge in the go rounds in order to have a lead that can’t be overtaken by the guys who are sitting well in the average come Championship Saturday. Since that miss, the Sulphur, Louisiana roper has been first, second and on Monday night, his 7.9 was good for third, leaving him first overall as rookie Ty Harris, (San Angelo, Texas) a CFR qualifier this year, won the round with a 7.4. Hanchey stayed ahead of second place man, Haven Meged, another 2019 CFR cowboy, by $33,000. And anyone who thinks Hanchey has too steep a mountain to climb, needs to look no further than CFR 46 at Red Deer, a month ago, when he got off to a slow start, then shot the lights out in the late rounds to claim his fourth Canadian championship.

Round five steer wrestling was a challenge for several competitors, but the last man, Kyle Irwin, Robertsdale, Alabama, dropped his steer in 3.7 seconds to earn his first round win at this Finals. Overall leader remains Helena, MT’s Ty Erickson, though the five time WNFR qualifier is well down in the average. Two time world champions, Hunter Cure and Tyler Waguespack, hold down second and third respectively in the World Standings with Waguespack leading the average and Cure in fourth spot. Provost, Alberta’s Scott Guenthner struggled - posting a 6.4 to be out of the money.

The oldest barrel racer of this year’s Finalists, Dona Kaye Rule from Minco, Oklahoma, posted a spectacular 13.56 second run on the top of the ground to garner her second round win and third paycheque of the 10 day Finals. Fellow Oklahoman, Emily Miller, despite finishing out of the money Monday night kept the barrels standing and still sits first in the World and crucial average.

And in the bull riding, Rochelle, Georgia WNFR rookie, Daylon Swearingen ended an 0 for 4 slump as he topped the field with an outstanding 92 point ride on Big Stone Rodeo’s War Cry. Koby Radley marked a 90.5 for second spot - good for $20,730 - which will help the Louisiana bull rider maintain first in the average. Five time World Champion, Sage Kimzey picked up a share of 3-4 with an 89 point ride. The Strong City, Oklahoma talent continues to hold his commanding World lead and is second in the average.

Canada Night in the Bareback Riding

For Immediate Release

It was just a matter of time.

You knew that Orin Larsen would eventually make the kind of rides that are his trademark. Tonight in go-round number 4 at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the 28 year-old Manitoba bareback rider did just with his first WNFR 90 point ride on Frontier Rodeo’s Night Fist. The reigning Canadian Champion pocketed the $26,230 first place cheque and moved into second place in the world standings, less than $8,000 behind season leader Clayton Biglow.

“Anytime you see a Frontier Rodeo horse beside your name you dang sure get excited about it; even the guys in the locker room were excited for me,” Larsen noted. “I was kind of mad at myself after these last two rides when I wasn’t really at my best. My brothers (Tyrel and Kane) texted me and told me to just do what I came here to do and have fun. So I came in here tonight with a different mindset and I’m pretty happy with the way it turned out.”

Canadian fans had still more to cheer about as Cadogan bareback rider, Clint Laye gave the Canucks a 1-2 finish in the round as he matched up with Outlaw Buckers’ American Thumper for 88 points and a $20,730 payday. Larsen is splitting 9/10 in the average with Laye occupying 7th spot.

2016 World Champion Zeke Thurston has gone to the lead in the 2019 world standings. The Big Valley, AB sensation who captured his first Canadian title just over a month ago was 83.5 points on Silver Spur Rodeo’s Best Hope. The third place cheque of $15,653, combined with a first and second in the earlier rounds moved Thurston a full $15,000 ahead of regular season leader Ryder Wright who has been blanked through the first four go-rounds.

Rookie NFR saddle bronc riding qualifier, Dawson Hay, Wildwood, Alberta, failed to make the horn on Hi Lo ProRodeo’s Toma Jo while the Calgary Stampede’s Xena Warrior made it two for two against Hudson Hope, BC cowboy, Jake Watson. The horse also tossed the two-time WNFR hand in the first round of the CFR.

Bridger Chambers - Dan Hubbell PRCA photoTwo time WNFR Montana bull dogger, Bridger Chambers, enjoyed his first 2019 go-round win with a 3.6 second time. The 2018-19 Canadian Finals Rodeo qualifier jumped from ninth to fifth in the world standings and maintains seventh spot in the average. Helena, Montana’s Ty Erickson continues to hold down the world leader position; the five time WNFR qualifier helped his cause Sunday night with a 3.7 second run - good for a share of 2/3 and an $18,192 payday. Canadian Champion Scott Guenthner clocked a very respectable 4.4, which once the dust had settled, was good for a split of sixth with Dakota Eldridge. Guenthner is sixth in the world and eleventh in the average.

Four-time and reigning Canadian Tie-Down Roping Champion, Shane Hanchey, posted a 7.5 second run en route to his second go round win. The 2013 world titleist extended his lead atop the world standings but a no-time in the second round means the Sulphur, Louisiana talent is forced to do his damage in the go rounds. And that’s what he’d been doing with two wins and a second in the other three rounds.

2019 Canadian Champion Team Ropers Matt Sherwood on the header side and Hunter Koch on the heeling side turned in a 5.0 time to finish just one hole out of the money. The good news is that the duo is second in the big-paying average and have won over $25,000 each through four rounds to date.

Sherwood, the two time World Champ celebrated his 50th birthday during the course of the 2019 season while his rookie partner is just 22 years-old, making them the epitome of the “veteran and the kid.” The two first paired up at the Tucson Rodeo back in January and they have enjoyed tremendous success ever since. Chad Masters, Cedar Hill, TX and Joseph Harrison, Overbrook, OK earned the round win with a 3.7 second run. A pair of Texans lead the World Standings, Clay Smith and Jade Corkill, after four rounds.

Canada’s lone representative in the bull riding, Jordan Hansen, bucked off Barnes PRCA Rodeo’s Pure Gangster in Round 4. The go round win went to All Around leader Stetson Wright who was 91 points on Painted Pony Championship Rodeo’s Holy Holly while Strong City, Oklahoma five time World Champion, Sage Kimzey, continues to lead the world standings after a fourth place finish in the 4th go-round. Kimzey’s lead over Wright sits at $87,000 as he moved past the $300,000 plateau and closes in on a sixth gold buckle.

WNFR rookie Emily MIller and her nine year old gelding, Chongo, took advantage of the top position on the ground to post a rapid 13.64. This makes four consecutive money-making runs and the second go-round win for the Weatherford, Oklahoma cowgirl. With $88,843 in Finals earnings to date, Miller has moved to number one spot in the World and is first in the average. For the second night in a row, four time Canadian Champion Lisa Lockhart finished out of the money. The Oelrichs, South Dakota barrel racer has slipped to second in the World and third in the average.

Canadian Champions Shine at WNFR Opening Night

Call It Canadian Carma

Three of the go-round winners at the first performance of the 2019 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo have big-time connections to Canada.

Reigning Canadian champions—saddle bronc rider, Zeke Thurston and tie-down roper, Shane Hanchey turned in winning performances in their respective events while the 2018 Canadian titleist, Richmond Champion, topped the field in the bareback riding.

Thurston, who hails from Big Valley, Alberta, and who won the 2016 World Championship, took a big step toward a second title with an 88 point ride on Mo Betta Rodeo’s Sue City Sue to collect the winner’s cheque of $26,230.77. Just as important, the man leading coming into the Finals, Ryder Wright, bucked off which resulted in Thurston closing to within $21,000 of Wright’s $234,488 season total.

Hanchey, the Sulfur, Louisiana roper who won his fourth Canadian title this year (and second in a row) turned in a blistering 7.6 second run for the go-round win. Hanchey moved to third overall while Haven Meged, the 21 year old Miles City, MT rookie - who was also a major force at the 2019 CFR - went to the lead in the World Standings after his third place finish (8.3 secs) in the round.

Shane Hanchey - Hubbell photoChampion, whose Canadian connection includes his recent marriage to Canadian Olympic figure skater Paige Lawrence, started his 2019 WNFR as he did in 2018 - with a re-ride. This time around, Champion combined with Pickett Pro Rodeo's Night Crawler for 92 points.

“I was definitely excited to have Night Crawler for the re-ride,” Champion noted. “I have to admit I had some first-round jitters. And getting on that second horse kind of helped with that. There were three rides in the 90’s on the first night. That’s crazy - a real testament to the calibre of the stock here.”

Evidence of how tough the round was were the 87.5 rides of Canadians Clint Laye and Orin Larsen that only split 6th place money.

2019 Canadian team roping titlests, Matt Sherwood of Pima, AZ and Hunter Koch (Vernon, TX) posted a 4.1 for second in the round - behind Tyler Wade and Cole Davison - while four time Canadian Champion barrel racer, Lisa Lockhart was also second in the round with a 13.70 behind only Emily Miller at 13.63. Lockhart’s first night success moves her to number one in the world.

2016 Canadian Champion, Jordan Hansen (Ponoka, AB), competing at his second WNFR, was fourth in the round with an 89.5 point ride on Bridwell Pro Rodeo’s Hou’s Bad News. Utah’s Stetson Wright, who leads the World All Around standings, bested the group of 15 bull riders with his impressive 92.5 point score on 4L and Diamond S Rodeo’s Monte Walsh. As was the case in the bareback riding, there were three 90 plus point rides in the bull riding on night one.

Two time and reigning Canadian steer wrestling champion, Scott Guenthner (Provost, AB), struggled in the opening round posting an 18.2 second run while Dakota Eldridge, Elko, NV, earned top money with his 3.6.
