Equine Piroplasmosis in Missouri and Visicular Stomatitis in Texas
Please be advised that the USDA has notified the CFIA that there is an outbreak of Equine Piroplasmosis in the state of Missouri (announced June 12, 2009) and a case of Vesicular Stomatitis in the state of Texas (announced June 15, 2009).
The USDA has been asked to suspend the issuance or endorsement of export certificates for horses and other equines originating in Missouri (effective June 12) and originating in Texas (effective June 15).
Equines from the other states must be certified that they have not been in Missouri or Texas during the previous 21 days.
Equine importers will be asked by the Canadian Border Services Agency if the equines originate from or have transited through either Missouri or Texas. If the answer is yes, the horses will be inspected by CFIA at the border.
At this stage, it is not clear how this will affect Canadian horses returning from the USA. We will notify you when we receive this information.
