CPRA Athlete Action South of ’49

Four-time world champion Zeke Thurston made the highest-marked ride of the 2024 the 2024 Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo’s ProRodeo Tournament to win Semi-Finals B on Friday. The Canadian cowboy rode a Canadian horse from the legendary Calgary Stampede herd called Exotic Warrior to win $4,000 and advance to Saturday’s championship round FWSSR photo by James Phifer.

February 4, 2024 – As the 2024 edition of the Fort Worth Stock Show and Rodeo wrapped up last night, several CPRA members were in the spotlight. 2023 Canadian season leader and CFR cowboy, Dalton Massey split the final round (with 2019 CFR qualifier Tanner Brunner). They were 3.7 and each pocketed $16,000. Massey’s overall payday was $21,500.

In the Saddle Bronc Riding, four time and reigning Canadian and World champ Zeke Thurston was second in the final with a 90.5 score for a $12,000 payday. Dawson Hay was 87 points but did not place and brother Logan was a no score in the Fort Worth finale.

Among other recent success stories on the PRCA winter rodeo run:

Thorhild, Alberta’s Ethan Mazurenko had back to back wins on the weekend, first topping the bareback riding field at Bismarck, North Dakota with an 81.5 point ride for $1784, then rolling into St. Paul, Minnesota where he was 85.5 for $3630.

A little further north at Rapid City, 2022 CFR qualifier Leighton Berry captured the bareback riding title with an 88.5 score for $5534 and former Canadian champ Kolton Schmidt and heeling partner, Landon Glenn roped their steer in 4.1 seconds for a third place cheque of $3238.

At the Rapid City Xtreme Bronc competition, Ben Andersen finished second overall while Q. Taylor and Sawyer Eirikson tied for third. Including long go earnings, Taylor was actually the biggest winner among the Canadians taking home $5106 while Andersen cashed at $4428 and Eirikson picked up $3031.

And at the Cinch World’s Toughest Rodeo, rookie bull riding sensation Beau Gardner struck again, this time for an 86 score and $3948 while bronc riders K’s Thomson and Kole Ashbacher added $2823 and $1667 respectively to their bank accounts.

2022 Canadian champion barrel racer Taylor Manning bested the field at the Helzapoppin Rodeo in Buckeye, Arizona with a 16.96 second run for $2039.
