In uber-competitive Canadian professional rodeo, every win is important in the battle for the 12 coveted berths that take cowboys and cowgirls to the Canadian Finals Rodeo and a chance at earning that prized gold buckle.
So while a win is good news, a double win is just that much better. Bronc rider Dawson Dahm put that adage to work on the weekend as he rode C5 Rodeo’s 991 Cowgirl Cool to 84.5 points and a $1491 payday at the Benalto Stampede, then followed it up with an 80 point effort at the re-scheduled Bassano Pro Rodeo on Northcott-Yule’s 8 Flying Squirrel for a split of top spot (with Dixon Tattrie) and an additional $838. The $2300 cash injection provided a much-needed boost to the number 11-ranked bronc rider in Canada as the battle for the final qualifying spots on the CFR roster heats up. Dahm missed out on a trip to Rogers Place in 2024 after three CFR appearances prior to last year and is doing all he can to ensure that recent history doesn’t repeat itself in 2025.
Not wanting to miss out on the double-win celebration was the team roping tandem of Trey Gallais and Logan Spady. If you’re looking for consistence you need look no further than the duo from Sundre and Alliance respectively. They were 5.0 flat at Bassano to earn $1812, then 24 hours later turned in the exact same 5.0, this time earning the pair $2037 each. Spady and Gallais are all but guaranteed to be in the top five in the standings as a result of their weekend’s solid work.
Two more top money earners included tie-down roper, Kyle Lucas, who has had the hot hand of late and two-time and reigning Canadian champion barrel racer Taylor Manning. Lucas was 8.0 for the win at Bassano and split 2/3 at Benalto with a 9.1 to amass $3700 at the two Maple Leaf Circuit stops (Bassano is also a Precision Drilling Series event). Meanwhile Manning topped the field at Benalto with a 15.53 second run and added a seventh place finish at Bassano for a total of $3983. Lucas was leading the Canadian standings heading into the weekend and Manning was second, likely moving to first overall after the two weekend successes.
This week’s CPRA action sees rodeo athletes making their way to the Teepee Creek Stampede for an SMS Equipment Pro Tour stop and Bowden Daze, a Maple Leaf Circuit rodeo. Both events run July 11-13.
