Rodeo Family Bids Farewell to Frank Mickey

Nov 30, 2025

The Rodeo Community will miss Frank Mickey.

A quiet, dedicated man – with a definite twinkle in his eye – Frank could often be found behind the scenes at a rodeo, in particular, the legendary Ponoka Stampede. Born in 1927, Frank started volunteering at the Stampede in 1947. For almost eight decades, he served the organization and helped build the Ponoka Stampede into the renowned event we enjoy today.

In addition to excelling at his 32 year career with the Town of Ponoka Public Works Department, Frank served countless hours with the Ponoka Stampede serving as President, Grounds Chairman and Grounds Manager. A Lifetime Member of both the Ponoka Stampede and the Canadian Professional Rodeo Association, Frank was on the CPRA board of directors for several years and was active in the Dodge Truck rodeo program.

Frank was inducted into the Canadian Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame in the Builders Category in 2005.

Frank Mickey passed away November 22 at 98 years of age. Condolences go out to Frank’s family, the Ponoka Stampede community and a legion of rodeo friends.

* A Celebration of Life for Frank Mickey will be held December 1st at 2:00 pm at the Ponoka Stampede Stagecoach Saloon. Donations in honor of Frank Mickey can be made to the Canadian Cancer Society and the Canadian Pro Rodeo Historical Society.
