WNFR – Final Highlights
Champions Declared at NFR 2025

Rocker Shane Steiner is one of the most charismatic rodeo athletes of this era. He’s also one of the most talented. And now the fifth-generation superstar, like his dad, Sid and granddad Bobby before him—is a world champion. He locked down his first title with a 90.5 ride on the Calgary Stampede’s D-508 Disco Party, the Bareback Horse of the Year in Canada, to win second place money of $28,980 in the final round.

The 22-year-old laid claim to the bareback riding title after a record shattering season and ended it by receiving the coveted champion’s gold buckle, his first, at the Thomas and Mack Arena. Steiner, the Weatherford, Texas talent, wins his first world title at the same age as his Hall of Fame grandpa won the bull riding title back in 1973. Steiner ended the season with $507,532.
Sam Peterson, the Helena, Montana hand making his first NFR appearance just a couple of months after he was at the Canadian Finals Rodeo was the Finals Aggregate Champion with 854 points on 10 rides for the first-place cheque of $94,036.

In steer wrestling, Canadian Scott Guenthner perhaps did not have the NFR he had hoped for. But it would be hard to be disappointed with a season that saw the Provost, Alberta rancher/family man/rodeo cowboy win his second Calgary Stampede title, then do something that had never been done—win all five rounds at the Canadian Finals Rodeo en route to his fifth Canadian championship in eleven trips to the CFR, and qualify for a sixth appearance at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. Guenthner rode out of Las Vegas with $62,099 including a go-round win and seventh place in the aggregate that accounted for $15,968 of that total. Guenthner was mounted on Tanner Milan’s award-winning bull dogging horse Eds Famous Bar (Eddie).
The World Champion Steer Wrestler for 2025 was the smallest man in a big man’s sport. Tucker Allen of Ventura, California won both the aggregate (46.4 seconds on 10 head) and the world title with $398,913. Coincidentally, Allen’s hazer was riding a Canadian-bred horse out of the Danard program in Parkland County, Alberta.

Though they made a tremendous run at a world title, the cross-border team-roping tandem of Kolton Schmidt of Barrhead on the heading side and Florida’s Jonathan Torres came up just short in their quest for the elusive world champion’s buckles. A no-time in round ten left the duo in 4th place in the aggregate (33.0 seconds on 8 runs) as they won a whopping $208,870 during their ten day stay in Las Vegas. That brought the Canadian’s season total to a 4th place $338,807 in the world standings, not bad for a guy who came to the finals in 14th place in the world. Andrew Ward and Jake Long prevailed to win both the aggregate and the world title, the first for both men.

Not to be forgotten in the excitement of the battle for a world championship, is the performance of the dynamic Wainwright, Alberta team roping brother combination–Dawson and Dillon Graham–who were making their first appearance at the NFR. The 2022 Canadian Champions won two rounds, placed in five and finished 8th in the aggregate, winning a total of $112,178 in their rookie NFR appearance.

It was a storybook December for the Quebec barrel racer, Julie Plourde. After drawing into her first NFR from the 16th position in the standings to replace the injured Anita Ellis, the now-Texas resident placed in a couple of rounds but more importantly kept the barrels standing for all ten performances. When eventual world champion, Kassie Mowry, hit the last barrel of her last run, the Quebec cowgirl’s fairy-tale finals had a fairy-tale ending as she was the aggregate champion (139.67 on 10 runs), thus collecting the $94,036 to go with a pair of cheques, a 5th and a 6th in the rounds for an NFR earnings total of $109,413. And a little icing on the cake—she also captured the Jerry Ann Taylor Best-Dressed Award for barrel racers.

Despite the mishap on her final barrel, the World Champion for the second time in a row is Kassie Mowry. The Dublin, Texas cowgirl rode two horses at this NFR—Will and Cornbread—and enjoyed success on both, laying to rest any concerns people might have had that she was not riding her outstanding mount from one year ago—Jarvis. And another cowgirl with a Canadian connection, Carlee Otero had an all or nothing Finals. Otero, who was born in Red Deer and has twice competed at the CFR, won four go-rounds and ran the fastest time of the NFR in round nine, a 13.20 en route to one of her four round successes. The only issue was she failed to place in any of the other six rounds and knocked down a few barrels along the way. But the talented athlete won $146,672 at the Thomas and Mack, overall a very decent ten days in the desert.

Stetson Wright came to Las Vegas an eight-time World Champion. He left town with two more notches on his pistol, adding a hard-fought bullriding title (his third) and a sixth All-Around buckle to a resume that is even more remarkable when you factor in that the Beaver, Utah mega-talent is just 26 years-old. His six All Around titles tie him with Larry Mahan and Tom Ferguson. The Aggregate Bull Riding Champion was Dairy, Oregon’s stand-out TJ Gray. He rode seven of his ten bulls, the only man to get by that many.

The saddle bronc riding was dominated by the Wright family with the youngest of the three brothers, Statler, prevailing in the aggregate and compiling $455,940 in season earnings, edging brother and defending champion Ryder by less than $500 with the third of the Wrights, Stetson, in third spot. Zeke Thurston who battled hard throughout, suffered his first buck-off in 56 NFR rides in round nine and it was costly, knocking the four-time world champ out of the running. Ryder split the final round with an 89.75 on the Calgary Stampede bronc, D-19 Dandy Delight and another outstanding Calgary horse C-35 Crocket, carried CFR qualifier Zachary Dallas to an 88 point 4th place cheque of $15,377.

Thurston, the six-time Canadian title-holder placed six times at Las Vegas for $78,067 and finished fifth in the world standings. Dawson Hay struggled a little at this NFR with just two placings and $27,796 to finish 8th in the world standings. Eckville, Alberta’s Ben Andersen placed in three rounds and finished fifth in the average to leave Vegas with $68,900 in his Wranglers. And the fourth Canadian bronc rider, Q. Taylor, placed twice for a total of $21,291 at his first NFR.

The tie down roping was an up and down affair for the Canadian contingent. The only competitor from north of the 49th parallel, Kyle Lucas, picked up a third place cheque in the fifth round, for $21,882, his lone trip to the pay window. But a couple of Canadian horses were outstanding. Peso the four-legged, buckskin superstar belonging to Nanton, Alberta’s Logan Bird was amazing again. Peso was the chosen mount of both of the Harris brothers from Texas. The buckskin carried his riders to nine placings in total, including three go round wins and a total NFR haul of $279,150. and carried the two Texans to $279,150.

California tie down roper, Brushton Minton was riding Lincoln, the horse belonging to Medicine Hat roper, Tyler Popescul. The two combined for five placings, and finished second in the average for $124,198 in total earnings for Minton.

The 2025 tie down roping Aggregate and Champion is Texan Riley Webb for the third year running. Webb was once again a dominant force as he amassed $555,543 for the season.
And on the rough stock side, four rounds were won on Canadian horses, two on the Wayne Vold bronc, Renegade, another bronc riding round on the Calgary Stampede’s Freedom Xpress while there was one round win in bareback riding, that on Legend Rodeo’s Ramblin Man. Several Canadian contractors saw their horses and bulls carry competitors to solid placings throughout the Finals while a few others put the best cowboys on the planet on the ground prior to the eight second horn. And in the arena for a second year in a row was Canadian pickup man extraordinaire, Tyler Kraft, looking after both two-legged and four-legged athletes.
One final note, rodeo competitors and fans bid a fond farewell to one of the greatest bucking horses ever, C5 Rodeo’s F-13 Virgil, a World Champion in both bareback and saddle bronc. The great gray made his final appearance in the tenth round of the saddle bronc riding at the Thomas and Mack arena in Vegas.

Canadians can be proud of the men, the women, the contractors and the animals, every one of whom, gave their all at the 2025 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

WNFR Performance Nine Highlights
Elation and Frustration for the Red and White
Nine rounds done. One round to go.
One Canadian cowboy from Barrhead, Alberta who has team roping in his DNA and who represents three generations of a roping family, is one run away from the gold buckle that goes to the world champion.

In round nine, Schmidt and his Florida heeling partner, Jonathan Torres turned in a 4.3 second effort to take home a fourth-place cheque of $15,377 to solidify their positions on the two leaderboards that matter the most—aggregate and world standings.
The cross-border tandem have chalked up three firsts, a second, a third, a fourth and a sixth over the nine rounds and have amassed $164,514 at the Thomas and Mack.
Kolton Schmidt is carrying the hopes of his family and his country. He doesn’t need to win round ten; he may not even have to place. But for the man who started this Wrangler National Finals Rodeo in 14th place in the header standings and now leads both the aggregate and the world standings, that gold buckle is within his grasp.
At the other end of the scale, there was disappointment as Canada’s King of the Cowboys, Zeke Thurston, saw his saddle bronc riding championship chase take a devastating hit when a Canadian horse, Ward Macza’s 612 Falkland Playboy bucked off the four-time world titleist ending Thurston’s amazing run of NFR consecutive rides at 56. The man he was battling for the title, Statler Wright, wasted no time is seizing the opportunity and won second in the round with an 88 point ride. That ride gives Wright the lead in the all-important, and ultra-lucrative, aggregate race while Thurston’s uncharacteristic buckoff knocked him off the aggregate board.
Eckville, Alberta bronc rider, Ben Andersen, added to his NFR haul, as he spurred his way to a 4th place 86 point ride, good for $15,377. The four time NFR qualifier sits third in the average with 759.25 points on nine rides.

A couple of Canadian tie-down roping horses continued to shine on Friday night in Las Vegas. Texas cowboy and former Canadian champion, Ty Harris, rode Logan Bird’s brilliant buckskin, Peso, to a second place 7.1 second run for $28,980 while California cowboy Brushton Minton was solid once again on Medicine Hat roper Tyler Popescul’s outstanding gelding, Lincoln. Minton cashed a 5/6 split 8.0 run for $7688. But more important for the 27 year-old at his second WNFR, he sits third in the aggregate which would pay a tidy $60,324 if he can hold that spot for one more run.

Another competitor with an eye on a big aggregate payday is the French-Canadian barrel racer, Julie Plourde. In a ninth round won by Red Deer-born Carlee Otero in 13.20 (her third go-round win of the 2025 Finals), Plourde, the reserve WPRA Rookie of the Year in 2024, was once again both safe and solid. The Quebec product, who drew in from the 16th spot in the standings when an injury sidelined Anita Ellis prior to the NFR, has placed in only two rounds, cashing one fifth and on sixth place cheque to date. But she stands to cash another–a big one–$76,292 if she can be mistake free one more time and hang on to her place in the aggregate.
And, in bull riding, a couple of buckers from north of 49 were on their game in round dispatching their riders on this night. Macza Pro Rodeo’s Judge and Jury dispatched Luke Mackey while Big Stone Pro Rodeo’s Ace took care of business at the expense of the teenage sensation, Wacey Schalla.

WNFR Performance Eight Highlights
Canadian Presence is Huge With Two Rounds Remaining
Two towns in Canada.
Barrhead, Alberta.
Big Valley, Alberta.
Two hometowns to two Canadian cowboys who have a chance to etch their names in the Pro Rodeo Book of greatness.

The first is a team roper from a team roping dynasty. Kolton Schmidt is competing at his third Wrangler National Finals Rodeo and after Canada Night and with two rounds remaining at this year’s NFR, he has been one of the stories of 2025. He came to Las Vegas well back in the field of fifteen but tonight he and Florida partner Jonathan Torres won their third round of this NFR with a 3.8. And with eight rounds in the books, they sit first in the aggregate (28.7 on 7 runs) and first in the world standings—Schmidt has banked $279,074 and while there’s still work to do, it has been an incredible run for the hands-across-the-border tandem.

And in the bronc riding the King of the Canadian Cowboys—Zeke Thurston, has moved into the driver’s seat in the saddle bronc riding and is bearing down on a remarkable fifth world title. But it’s not over, not by a long shot, because the youngest of the three Wright brothers in the event, Statler, is nipping at the heels of the Big Valley superstar, who just a couple of months ago won his sixth Canadian title. On Canada Night at the NFR, Thurston finished out of the money but maintained his hold on first place in the aggregate (Statler is second) and third in the world standings (Statler is fourth). The two of them will battle to the wire and the two remaining rides from each man will determine the 2025 champion.
There were other solid efforts from the land of the Maple Leaf on this night. The Wainwright brother combination, Dawson and Dillon Graham, cashed their third cheque of the finals, this one a fifth place $9463 courtesy of their 4.9 second run.

In the tie-down roping event, four-time Canadian Champion, Shane Hanchey from Sulphur, Louisiana split 2/3 in the round with a 7.5 second effort and the man he tied with, Texan Joel Harris, was riding the four-legged buckskin who has been the equine story of the last two NFR’s, Logan Bird’s Daddys Shiner Cat (Peso). The Bird family call Nanton, Alberta home. And after splitting 4/5 in the round, California hand, Brushton Minton, occupies third place in the aggregate, just one second out of the lead. Minton is mounted on Medicine Hat, Alberta cowboy, Tyler Popescul’s Lincoln who has been flawless throughout the first eight NFR rounds.
In the bareback riding, 2024 world champion, Dean Thompson rode C5 Rodeo’s 712 Winning Rose to a third place 86.25 and $21,882. It was the second money ride made on the horse at NFR 2025. And in bull riding it was Legend Rodeo’s 470 Huckleberry carrying Luke Mackey to a 5/6 split with an 87 pointer that paid $7688. In steer wrestling the hazing horse for both the first and second place finishers in the round, Tucker Allen and Jesse Brown (3.9 and 4.0 seconds respectively) came from the Danard breeding program in Parkland County, Alberta.

And Quebec cowgirl Julie Plourde placed for the second night in a row, putting up a 13.89 for a sixth place cheque ($5914) and more Importantly, she held onto second place in the aggregate, right behind reigning world champion Kassie Mowry and 67 one-hundredths of a second up on Brittany Pozzi Tonnozzi.

WNFR Performance Seven Highlights
Round Seven pivotal for Canadians
Nobody enjoyed the Wednesday night seventh round of the 2025 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo any more than the Brothers Graham—Dawson and Dillon, team ropers extraordinaire from Wainwright, Alberta.

The 2022 Canadian champions, competing at their first NFR, blazed their way to the round win with a 3.5 second textbook run that earned each roper the top prize – $36,668 each. It was the tandem’s second round win and they also have a second place to their credit for $87,925 in earnings to date. Despite a couple of hiccups–an earlier round crossfire call and a one heel catch that turned a record-tying 3.3 into 8.3 seconds–it’s been a tremendous first NFR appearance for the talented duo.

The other Canadian connection in the team roping, Barrhead cowboy Kolton Schmidt and his American partner, Jonathan Torres put up a 5.0 second run. That was out of the money for the round but moved the team to second place in the aggregate and third in the world with a shot at a world title very much out there as the Finals moves into its last three days.

Another Canadian who has his sites set on the gold buckle is Canada’s Zeke Thurston who rode the outstanding Calgary Stampede bronc, Y-38 Yesterday’s Delivery to an 88.5 pointer for a 2-3 split with the accompanying $25,431 payday. The Big Valley, Alberta legend has moved to number one in the all-important aggregate and 3rd in the world standings but Statler Wright with back-to-back round wins is in hot pursuit.

Julie Plourde, the first French Canadian cowgirl to compete in the barrel racing at the NFR has been having a solid week after replacing the injured Anita Ellis. The Quebec talent, who now makes her home in Krum, Texas, won a fifth-place cheque for $9463 courtesy of a 13.65, a solid run on a night when several barrels, and one cowgirl, hit the ground. Plourde also finds herself in second place in the aggregate with a shot at a huge cheque if she can hold that spot.

In tie-down roping, Texan, Joel Harris and Peso, the four-legged superstar belonging to Canadian, Logan Bird, made it back-to-back go round wins, this time with a 7.5 second effort for the victory lap. The win, Peso’s seventh career trip to the winner’s circle at the Thomas and Mack. Harris, despite a costly no-time in the 4th round has battled his way back to 7th in the aggregate and 3rd in the world standings, And Brushton Minton, the California roper, has been consistent and now sits fifth in the average while riding another horse from north of the 49th parallel—Lincoln, owned by Medicine Hat, Alberta hand, Tyler Popescul.
In the bull riding only two bulls were ridden. One that wasn’t was Nansen Vold’s uber-electric Splash Tide bucking under the Wayne Vold Rodeo banner; he was on his game, dispatching world champion, Ky Hamilton in relatively short order.
WNFR Performance Six Highlights
Solid Night For Canadians in WNFR Round Six
As has been the case on several occasions at the 2025 edition of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, there was a major Maple Leaf flavour in the saddle bronc riding. For the second time, Wayne Vold’s outstanding gelding, Renegade carried his rider to the winner’s circle. This time, the man aboard was Statler Wright, youngest of the three Wright brothers in the bronc riding. And the score was a whopping 90, equalling the exact mark that in round one resulted in a first place $39,688 payday for Stetson Wright.

But there was more Canadian cooking in the premier event of rodeo. Ben Andersen enjoyed his best moment of this NFR as he rode Cervi’s Vitalix Womanizer, a world champion horse to a 3-4 split in the round with an 88.25 point ride and an $18,630 payday. The Eckville, AB cowboy now sits fifth in the aggregate as well. And the man he shared that 3-4 spot with was the third of the Wright brothers, Ryder who is clinging to the overall lead with four rounds remaining. Ryder was aboard the Big Stone Rodeo bronc Gone Fishing.

And in sixth spot and cashing for $5914 was four-time World Champion and six-time Canadian title-holder, Zeke Thurston. But here’s the thing–the Big Valley, Alberta superstar has been quietly going about the business of moving very much into contention for a fifth gold buckle. Thurston sits 3rd in the world with $306,904 in season earnings. That’s $85,000 behind Ryder Wright but both Wright and the other man ahead of the Canadian on the world leaderboard, Damian Brennan, recorded a no score in an earlier round. So the aggregate (average) will be huge in determining the finals outcome. And Zeke Thurston is number one in the aggregate (first place pays $94,035) with both Brennan and Wright on the outside of the average at this point of the Finals.
Speaking of being in contention for a world championship, Barrhead, Alberta team roper, Kolton Schmidt and his Florida heeler, Jonathan Torres were at it again, putting up a 3.6 second run for third in the round. After an opening round miss, the tandem has been unstoppable, recording two firsts, a second, a third and a sixth. They sit second in the aggregate and third in the chase for world supremacy. Nobody is hotter than the Schmidt/Torres combo.

Noteworthy too, was the run of Dawson and Dillon Graham. The Wainwright, AB brothers posted a time of 8.3, one spot out of the money. But that time came with a five second penalty for catching only one heel. Had they been able to nab both back feet, the resulting 3.3 seconds would have equalled the NFR arena record.

And in the tie-down roping, Joel Harris put together a blazing 6.8 second run for the win. And as has been the case for the last two years, Harris was riding the incomparable Peso, owned by Logan Bird who noted after the roping wrapped up that round 6 marked the sixth NFR go-round win recorded on the amazing buckskin from north of the 49th parallel.
WNFR Performance Five Highlights
We’re Ba-a-a-ck! … on the Leaderboard in Round Five
Twenty-four hours after the Canadian contingent had as tough a night as you can imagine for a talented group of two and four-legged superstars, they fashioned a very different chapter in the NFR story.

Reigning and five-time Canadian Champion, Scott Guenthner got it going early for the Canucks, bouncing back from a round four no-time, bull-dogging his steer in 3.4 seconds for the win and the sizable $36,668 stipend that goes to the winner. Riding Eddie, Tanner Milan’s celebrated steer-wrestling horse, the Guenthner run was reminiscent of his performance at the Canadian Finals Rodeo when he ran the table, winning all five rounds en route to the title.
The bronc riding provided plenty of reason for jubilation for the Canadian athletes and their fans. After the talented Australian, Damian Brennan, collected the round win with a 90 point textbook ride, all the placings 2 through 6 had a Canadian connection. In second place, Hillsdale, Wyoming cowboy, Brody Cress, rode the soon-to-be-retired F13 Virgil from C5 Rodeo to 89.5 well-earned points.

And in another redemption moment–after a no score on Sunday night–Wildwood, Alberta’s Dawson Hay matched up with the Calgary Stampede’s outstanding mare, C-35 Crockett, and they combined for an 89 point score, earning the six-time NFR qualifier a cool third place payday of $21,882.

In fourth place, four time World Champion, Zeke Thurston teamed up with a world champ in his own right, The Black Tie from Sankey Pro Rodeo and Phenom Genetics, for 88.25 points and $15,377 from the Las Vegas slot machine called the NFR.

Then it was the horses’ turn to shine again. Stetson Wright drew the very cool Calgary Stampede bronc, D-19 Dandy Delight and collected 87 points for fifth place while the sixth and final payoff spot in the round went to Kade Bruno on Macza Pro Rodeo’s 6 Squash Blossom Steely Dan with an 86.75 mark on the horse.

And the Canadians were far from done. Barrhead, Alberta’s third generation team roping talent, Kolton Schmidt, combined with heeling partner Jonathan Torres for a sensational round win as they got it done in 3.7 for their second go-round win of this Finals. The Schmidt-Torres tandem now sit 4th in the average and Schmidt has climbed all the way to fifth place in the world standings just $16,000 back of season leader, Tanner Tomlinson.

And there was a huge sigh of relief from Canadian champion tie-down roper, Kyle Lucas, when he got off the schneid with a solid 7.9 second run for third place in the round and a $21,882 cheque.
A couple more livestock notes—in the bull riding Legend Rodeo’s 017 Halo’s Iron Hide bucked off the number two ranked bull rider in the world, Wacey Schalla; while in the bareback riding tonight, the rank horse award went to the Calgary Stampede’s D-508 Disco Party.
WNFR Performance Four Highlights
Canadians Struggle in WNFR Round Four
On a night that spelled frustration for several of the Canadian competitors at this year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, it was all about redemption for one bronc rider from north of the 49th parallel.

Twenty-four hours after being disqualified for missing his horse out, Q (Quinten) Taylor from Parkland, Alberta enjoyed his best moment at his first NFR as he rode Optiwize’s Tickled Pink from Championship Pro Rodeo to 86.5 points. The ride earned Taylor his first cheque of the Finals, a fourth place stipend of $15,377.
Two of his compatriots, Ben Andersen and four time World Champion Zeke Thurston, split sixth with identical 85.25 point rides to earn $2957 each. Andersen’s ride was on Wayne Vold Rodeo’s Elvira. Thurston, the Big Valley, AB superstar, remains in contention for a fifth world title as he sits third in the World standings. The round was won by Stetson Wright with 88.5 points on the Calgary Stampede’s outstanding seven year old gelding F-38 Freedom Xpress. Wright, who is leading the All Around standings, moved to fifth place overall in the saddle bronc riding after round four. One of the casualties of a generally tough night for Canadians, was Dawson Hay who missed his horse out and was unable to improve on his fourth place standing going into the round.
A couple of Canadian Champions made the leaderboard in tie-down roping. Two time Champion (and 2019 World Champion) Haven Meged from Miles City, Montana was 7.4 to split 3-4 and collect $18,630 while four time Canadian titleist Shane Hanchey (Sulphur, LA) was 7.5 for a fifth place payday of $9463. First time qualifier Kyle Lucas from Carstairs, AB recorded his first time in the four rounds to date. His 9.8 second run was outside of the placings for the round.
WNFR Performance Three Highlights
Canadian Team Ropers… “Show Me the Money”
They liked it so well they came back for more.

First time NFR team ropers Dawson and Dillon Graham from Wainwright, Alberta and three-time qualifier. Kolton Scmidt, from Barrhead, Alberta alongside his Florida partner, Jonathan Torres were part of a three-way tie for second in round number two. One night later they decided to go one better and tonight the two teams flying the Canadian Maple Leaf were part of a three-way tie again—this time for first. Their 3.8 second runs were just a half second off the arena record and earned them $29,177 giving all four men over $50,000 won in the first three rounds despite both teams taking a no-time on night number one. The brothers Graham and the third generation Schmidt are all former Canadian Champions, Schmidt in 2013 and the Grahams in 2022.

In the bronc riding, Dawson Hay, knows how to make the most of a second chance. Making his sixth appearance at the NFR, Hay was awarded a reride and took advantage of that second opportunity to mark 87.75 points on Weekend Departure from the Calgary Stampede. That earned him a second-place cheque for $28,980 and keeps Hay very much in the world title conversation. The Wildwood, Alberta hand sits third in the world standings at $307,600, just $30,000 out of the number one spot. However, he’ll need to pick up the pace in the aggregate (average) where he is well back in 8th spot. A few more nights like this one and that could change in a hurry.
On the livestock side Canada’s shining star was C5 Rodeo’s 712 Winning Rose. The horse carried CFR/NFR bareback riding qualifier Sam Petersen of Helena, Montana to an 87.25-point second place payday of $28,980. And Legend Rodeo’s 470 Huckleberry was outstanding in bucking off talented bull rider TJ Gray.

And Peso kept up his solid work as well as the legendary buckskin owned by Logan Bird carried Texan (and former Canadian Champion) Ty Harris to a 7.4 second third place result for in tie-down roping. The go round winner in barrel racing was Canadian-born (and another CFR qualifier) Carlee Otero who blistered a run that set a third round speed record—13.54 seconds on her 7 year-old palomino mare AM Regina George.

The rest of the eight-strong Canadian contingent, steer wrestler, Scott Guenthner, bronc riders Zeke Thurston, Q Taylor and Ben Andersen, and tie-down roper, Kyle Lucas were all out of the money on a Saturday night in Las Vegas.
WNFR Performance Two Highlights
Bounce Back Night for Canadian Team Ropers
Some members of the Team Canada NFR contingent who were a little quiet in round one of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo made a whole lot more noise in round number two.

There was a three-way tie for second place in the team roping on Friday night and two of the three teams in that 2-4 split have a Maple Leaf connection. The Wainwright, Alberta brothers, Dawson and Dillon Graham, bounced back from a no-time on night number one to post a rapid 4.1 while Barrhead’s Kolton Schmidt, roping alongside Jonathan Torres, matched the Grahams time with both teams pocketing $22,080 per man.

Zeke Thurston, in search of a fifth world saddle bronc riding title, made a statement ride for 89 points on Kirsten Vold Rodeo Company’s Breezy Fling to split 2/3 in the round with Stetson Wright and was just one point back of Australian Damian Brennan’s 90-point winning ride. Thurston, the Big Valley, Alberta superstar collected $25,431 and sits 3rd in the aggregate with 176 on two rides. The six time and reigning Canadian titleist has moved to third overall and is less than $59,000 behind Brennan in the fight for bronc riding supremacy. That’s not an insurmountable deficit when you consider that a round pays $36,668 to win it and the aggregate (average) pays $94,035 to the winner.

Steer wrestler Scott Guenthner was out of the money on night number two but is holding down fifth place in the aggregate with 9.3 seconds on two runs. Tie down roper Kyle Lucas and bronc riders, Q. Taylor, Dawson Hay and Ben Andersen have yet to hit the pay window.
On the animal side, Wayne Vold was smiling once again as his great veteran, True Grit, carried reigning World Champion bareback rider, Dean Thompson, to an 84 score and a 3-4 go-round split. And in an outstanding round of bull riding, Duane Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Alberta Prime Devil’s Advocate and his dance partner, Jesse Petri, teamed up for 85.5 points and sixth place in the round.

A send-off fit for a king. During last night’s performance, the Wrangler NFR honoured the great F13 Virgil (2025 World Saddle Bronc Horse) after it was announced he would retire at the end of this year’s event. What a great moment for C5 Rodeo and company!
WNFR Performance One Highlights
Canadian Stock Have a Big-Time NFR Round One
The best of the Canadian athletes at night number one of the 2025 National Finals Rodeo all had four legs.
And best of all was the Wayne Vold Rodeo bronc Renegade, a saddle bronc horse raised on the Eckville, Alberta Wyzykoski ranch, that carried Stetson Wright to a highlight reel 90 point score for a whopping $36,668. Not far back, Kade Bruno teamed up with another Canadian horse, Big Stone Rodeo’s Gone Fishing for a $21,8982 third place cheque.

In the bareback riding, Legend Rodeo’s Ramblin Man combined with Victor, Idaho cowboy Cooper Cooke for an outstanding 88.5 to win the round.

Tie-down roping saw not one but two Canadian-owned horses helping the men aboard capture some of the Las Vegas cash. Logan Bird’s four-legged superstar, Peso, continued his amazing Thomas and Mack Arena magic as he combined with Texan, Joel Harris, for a second place $28,980 payday while the California talent, Brushton Minton, riding Tyler Popescul’s Lincoln, took home a fifth-place stipend of $9463.
Provost, Alberta steer wrestler, Scott Guenthner, followed up his record shattering Canadian Championship performance, getting his sixth NFR appearance off to a solid start with a fifth place 4.7 second run good for $9463.

Of the four Canadian bronc riders in the field, only four-time world champion, Zeke Thurston, was able to pad his bank account as he rode Frontier Rodeo’s Frontier Medicine to 87 points and a split of sixth place for $2957.
