Night number two of the Maple Leaf Circuit Finals saw bronc rider Lucas Macza continue to set the pace in the classic event of rodeo.
While Macza didn’t win the second round on Thursday night he posted an 85 point score on Duffy Rodeo’s 664 Tequila Sheila to finish just a half point back of round winner Dawson Dahm (85.5 on Outlaw Buckers V40 I See Little). Macza, the second generation talent who won the opening round with an 85.5 point ride on Prairie Rodeo’s X20 Back Off, now holds a solid 7.5 point advantage in the aggregate and sits atop the Maple Leaf Circuit overall standings with an equally comfortable $4000 cushion with two rounds remaining.
The 2024 CPRA season leader recently shifted operations from High River, Alberta to Weyburn, just an hour southeast of Regina, making him one of the hometown favourites at the Circuit Finals, staged in conjunction with Canadian Western Agribition.
And Arras, British Columbia’s Brooke Wills kept a very consistent pedal to the metal in the barrel racing as she made it back-to-back wins with a 13.76 second run, just one one-hundredth of a second longer than her opening night run. The 2019 Canadian Champion and her talented Barrel Horse of the Year, Fames To Blame (Famey) came to the Finals with the narrowest of leads at the top end of the MLC season leaderboard. The tandem has extended that lead to $3500 heading into the Friday and Saturday rounds that will ring down the curtain on the Finals.
Overall, the Maple Leaf Circuit features 10 top contestants in each of the eight major rodeo events, decided by monies earned through the season at Maple Leaf Circuit rodeos. During Canadian Western Agribition, the Maple Leaf Finals Rodeo runs over four nights (Nov 27-30, 2024) with a total purse of $120,000. The MLCF Champion in each event qualifies for the National Finals Rodeo Open taking place in Pikes Peak, Colorado next July. Saskatchewan’s highest-paying rodeo is also it’s best attended, with more than 23,000 fans packing the Brandt Centre. Thousands more will watch every performance of the new Maple Leaf Finals on The Cowboy Channel.
For those attending in person, the Brandt Centre doors open at 6 pm and the pre-show is at 6:45 pm central standard time.
