And the Winners Are…

The 2024 edition of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo wrapped up another exciting ten-day run with a finale that had surprises, disappointments, celebrations and plenty of drama as the curtain came down on the rodeo season at the Thomas and Mack Arena in Las Vegas.

The Bronc Riding at this NFR went down to the last horse of the 10th and final round with an already two-time champion, Ryder Wright, matched up with 2024 World Champion bronc—Andrews Rodeo’s All or Nothin. Wright split the round with Lefty Holman, both with 89.5 scores and that was enough to clinch a third title for Wright. His $479,957 provided a comfortable margin over Australian Damian Brennan who wound up with $442,442 for second spot. Canada’s Zeke Thurston who came to Las Vegas in search of a fifth world title finished up in fourth place overall with $362,110. A good chunk of aggregate money went north of the border as Dawson Hay (Wildwood, AB) ended up 3rd, Thurston 4th, Kolby Wanchuk (Sherwood Park, AB) 5th and Ben Anderson (Eckville, AB) 6th.  2024 CFR qualifier Wyatt Casper won the aggregate title with 853 points on ten head and finished up third in the world for 2024.

After being a three-time runner-up for a world title, Josh Frost captured his first bull riding gold buckle as he went 7 for 10 at the NFR to win the aggregate (580 points on seven head) as well. Frost’s season earnings were $390,496.63. The Randlett, Utah cowboy added to an illustrious family storyline as he is a cousin of the late Lane Frost, the 1987 World Champion who tragically lost his life 35 years ago in a bull riding incident at Cheyenne’s Frontier Days Rodeo.  Josh Frost placed in all seven rounds in which he made the horn, winning two of those rounds including a spectacular 90-point effort in round six on Bill Fick Surprised from the Pickett Pro Rodeo Company. The final round was won by Hayes Weight who was the only bull rider to make the whistle for a whopping $108,665 go round winning payday.

Tie down roper, Riley Webb, got off to a blazing start at this year’s Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, winning three of the first four rounds and placing second in the other and the momentum of that start carried the Denton, Texas roper to a second consecutive world title. In the critical final round with a handful of the world’s best ropers nipping at his heels, Webb locked down the win with an 8.3 fifth place run to clinch both the aggregate (79.7/10) and his second straight world title with $475,214.04.

One of the cool Canadian stories of this Finals was the performance of Logan Bird’s award winning tie-down roping horse Daddys Shiner Cat (Peso). Bird mounted Joel Harris for all ten rounds, brother Ty Harris for nine and Tuf Cooper for the last two. Among the successes over the ten days were three round wins and several placings totalling over $250,000.

It was the Shootout at the Thomas and Mack in the bareback riding and when the smoke cleared and the dust settled, it was Dean Thompson who prevailed over Rocker Steiner for the world title. Thompson was 88.5 to win second in the tenth round while Steiner was 88 points on the Macza Pro Rodeo’s Stevie Knicks. The final margin of victory was just $18,000 as Thompson finished the season with $412,120 to $394,186 for Steiner. The Altamont, Utah cowboy also captured the aggregate title with 854.5 points on ten head.

Steer wrestling saw another tight race that went down to the last round with JD Struxness capturing his first world title. A dramatic second place 3.6 second run sealed the deal for the Alva, Oklahoma (via Minnesota) hand by just $1500 over Will Loomis–$309,220 to $307,712. Struxness has a Canadian connection as he competed at both the 2022 and 2023 Canadian Finals and is married to a southern Albertan. The aggregate title went to Utah dogger, Cash Robb, as he was 43.1 seconds on ten. Four-time Canadian Champion Scott Guenthner won a round and placed in three more to take home $97,440 while reigning Canadian Champion and PRCA season leader Dalton Massey struggled, picking up only one fifth place cheque for $8693. Both Guenthner and Massey rode Canadian, Tanner Milan’s, 2023 World and Canadian Steer Wrestling Horse, Eds Famous Bar (Eddie) for the ten day Finals.

The barrel racing at this year’s WNFR was a battle that featured two amazing cowgirls on two outstanding barrel racing horses. The duel went down to the last run on the last day before a winner emerged. In a week that saw four time World Champion Hailey Kinsel on top then five time NFR qualifier Kassie Mowry, then Kinsel once again, the two cowgirls went head-to-head into the final round with Mowry on Force the Goodbye (Jarvis) cashing a second place cheque with a 13.59 second run in the finale. When Kinsel failed to place in the 10th round – riding a backup horse with DM Sissy Hayday (Sister) under the weather – the title went to the Dublin, Texas cowgirl. Mowry wound up 4th in the aggregate behind Aggregate Champ Andrea Busby (136.18/10) while winning five rounds and finishing second in three more for record NFR earnings of 295,526, a season total of $457,809 and the gold buckle.

The team toping title went to header, Tyler Wade ($361,480) and heeler Wesley Thorpe ($361,480) while the aggregate winners were Clint Summers and Jake Long (44.3 seconds on nine runs). The Wade/Thorpe win makes it back to back championships for the tandem with Wade earning a third title back in 2019.

And when team roper Coleman Proctor missed his head catch in the tenth round, it allowed Shad Mayfield to ease past him to a World All-Around title, edging Proctor by less than $700.00. Mayfield earned $335,474 with Proctor at $334,798.

Just prior to the ten day WNFR, the 2025 Breakaway Roping season wrapped up on the world stage with Oklahoma cowgirl Kelsie Domer roping her way to both the NFR aggregate and the 2024 World titles. Domer won $34,221 at the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center over two days and ten rounds of competition enroute to a final season total of $168,758 and her first PRCA/NFR title.

Two cowgirls with CPRA connections were factors in the final BAW outcome. 2024 World title-holder Shelby Boisjoli-Meged, one of two Canadian born-and-raised competitors, came into the Finals in top spot and earned $12,564 in Las Vegas to wrap up her season in fourth spot with $160,729. And, two-time Canadian Champion, Shelby Pierson, competied at her second NFR, collecting $10,078 and finishing 13th  overall with total earnings of $99,137.

WNFR Round 9 – Can You Say Peso!

Dec 13 – Two days before the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, Canadian roper and horse trainer Logan Bird didn’t have a cowboy booked to ride Peso in the tie-down roping at the WNFR. Then he got the call from Texas roper, Joel Harris, saying he’d like to try him. After roping one practice calf, Harris made up his mind. He would ride Peso. (registered name, Daddys Shiner Cat)

Turns out it was a pretty good decision. In round nine of the NFR, Harris won his second go round of the week, not bad for a Finals rookie. But the night was all about Peso. The buckskin mounted the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place men in as dominant a performance as there may have ever been in one performance at the NFR.

It was Ty for first at 7.2, then brother Joel, Tuf Cooper and Quade Hiatt, all at 7.5 for the 2/3/4 split. Both of the Harris brothers and Cooper were riding the Canadian equine superstar; Ty Harris having switched to Peso after the first round and Tuf Cooper on him for the first time tonight.  The total monies won on Peso on this night alone was $74,257. Both Cooper and Ty Harris have been Canadian champions as has Peso’s owner—Nanton cowboy, Logan Bird.

The other big factor in this performance, at least for some of the leaders seemed to be the date—Friday, the 13th.  There was definite bad luck for people like Shad Mayfield who was leading the All-Around and was one of the top two in the tie-down roping but had to go to a second loop tonight and Kassie Mowry who had won five go rounds in a row but hit a barrel in round nine to let Hailey Kinsel back into the title race.

As for the Canadian contingent, steer wrestler Scot Guenthner – who won a round earlier in the week and placed in three more – broke the barrier and was out of the money on this night. Of the five bronc riders from this side of the 49th parallel who are competing in the Thomas and Mack, the top gun was Dawson Hay (Wildwood, AB) who marked 83.5 for a fifth-place cheque and held onto second place in the aggregate. Eckville, Alberta’s Ben Anderson was right behind his cousin with an 83 for a sixth-place cheque of $5433, his first payday of the week. But Andersen also moved up one spot to 7thin the aggregate. The other three Canadians, Zeke Thurston (80 points), Kolby Wanchuk (76.5 points) and Logan Hay (M.O.) did not place in the round.

And some Canadian buckers were prominent on Friday night as well. Statler Wright and brother Ryder split second and third in the bronc riding with a pair of 86 point rides—Statler on Wayne Vold Rodeo’s Elvira and Ryder on Macza Pro Rodeo’s Falkland Playboy. Another Macza horse, Ols Tubs Side Show factored into the payout in the bareback riding as the horse carried Bradlee Miller to a 3/4/5 split with an 86 score.

In bull riding, Duane Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Alberta Prime Devil’s Advocate bucked off Cooper James while Legend Rodeo’s Huckleberry bucked off Jeter Lawrence on a night when three-time runner-up for the world title, Josh Frost, clinched his first gold buckle having ridden seven of his first nine bulls.

Dec 12 – In the Money on Canada Night

There was a whole lot of red, the Canadian National anthem and even some hockey gear at the Thomas and Mack Arena in Las Vegas tonight. And on Canada Night, a long-standing Wrangler National Finals Rodeo tradition, a couple of Canadians rode to the occasion.

In the steer wrestling, four-time Canadian Champion Scott Guenthner collected his fourth cheque of an NFR he hadn’t really intended to get to. His 3.9 second run earned the Provost cowboy a 2/3/4 split and $20,285 to bring his total winnings to $97,440 through eight rounds. And it was nice to see Dalton Massey, the reigning Canadian Champion get off the schneid on Canada Night with his first cheque of the week—a fifth place $8693 courtesy of a 4.0 run. Both men are riding the 2023 Canadian steer wrestling horse of the year, Tanner Milan’s Eds Famous Bar (Eddie).

And in the bronc riding, Dawson Hay continues to have an outstanding NFR. It was an all-Canadian effort tonight as Dawson put up an 87-point ride on the Calgary Stampede bronc Weekend Departure to finish second in the round for a tidy $26,624, bringing his 2024 NFR earnings to $82,045. And better yet, the Wildwood, Alberta bronc rider maintained his hold on second place in the average. None of the other four Canadian bronc riders were able to place in the round with Zeke Thurston, who is chasing a fifth world title, now sitting 4th in the average and 5th in the world standings. Kolby Wanchuk is 5th in the aggregate and Ben Andersen is holding onto 8th spot.

Canada Night (Round 8) WNFR winners were:
Bareback: Dean Thompson, 88 pts on Priefert’s Dusty Roads
Steer wrestling: Ty Erickson, 3.6 seconds
Saddle bronc: Ryder Wright, 88 pts on Korkow Rodeo’s Kadoka Coolaid
Team roping: Kaleb Driggers/Junior Nogueira, 3.4 seconds (One tenth of a second off arena record)
Tie-down roping: (tie) Marty Yates and Ty Harris, 7.3 seconds
Barrel racing: (tie) Shelley Morgan and Kassie Mowry, 13.45 seconds
Bull riding: Hayes Weight, 88 pts on Sutton Rodeo’s Two Step

Countdown to Canada Night at the WNFR

Dec 11, 2024 – Twenty-four hours to Canada Night at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo.

With that in mind let’s look at what the Canadians have done so far. Steer wrestler Scott Guenthner came to the NFR in 15th spot. After seven rounds the Provost, Alberta cowboy, with four Canadian titles on his all-star resume, has won a round, placed in two others and has tallied $77,155 so far to move to 9th place in the world standings with three rounds remaining.

Five Canadian bronc riders rolled into Las Vegas as part of the fifteen-man contingent. Here’s how they’ve fared to date. After a blazing start that saw him win two of the first three rounds, Zeke Thurston, the Big Valley, Alberta talent who is seeking a fifth world title, has cooled off, cashing only one fourth place cheque over the last four rounds. But he still is very much in contention, having won $98,616 to date in Finals earnings which has him 4th in the world standings. And he has a 2/3 split in the aggregate with 594 points on 7 head.

The guy Zeke Thurston is splitting 2/3 in the aggregate with? That would be fellow Canadian Dawson Hay who has placed in three rounds for $55,421 in Finals winnings. Dawson sits 11th in the world standings.

Kolby Wanchuk is right behind Hay in 12th spot overall. He’s cashed two cheques including a lucrative 2/3/4 split in round three for NFR earnings of $21,643. The Sherwood Park, Alberta bronc rider is holding down sixth place in the all-important aggregate that pays eight monies.

Logan Hay, the elder of the talented Hay brothers from Wildwood, Alberta is holding down 14th spot in the world standings and 15th in the NFR aggregate. After a tough start to his finals, Logan has placed in each of the last two rounds, to win $6791 and looks like he’s got his week turned around.

In 15th place in the world standings with three rounds to go is the Eckville, Alberta cowboy, Ben Andersen. While Ben has yet to cash at these Finals, the good news is that he is sitting eighth in the aggregate and will visit the pay window if he can hold or improve that spot through the last three rounds.

On the livestock side, a couple of go-rounds have been won on Canadian horses. In bareback riding, Bradlee Miller cashed the big cheque courtesy of an 86.5 score on on Wayne Vold Rodeo’s True Grit.

And Jacob Lees split the fifth round with a spectacular 91 pointer on the much-decorated Virgil from the C5 Rodeo organization. The Calgary Stampede’s Born Fearless carried Cooper Cooke to 88 points and second place in round three.

The bronc riding has seen Zeke Thurston cash a third-place cheque with an 86.5 score on Calgary’s Erotic Tango in round two, while Brody Cress and Wyatt Casper split 2/3 in go round six with a couple of 86’s on Squash Blossom Steely Dan from the Macza Rodeo firm and Outlaw Buckers OLS Tubs Little Muffin.

And the Canadian bull pen has been a handful with only a couple of successful rides and several impressive buckoffs. TJ Gray won second in round five as he rode Outlaw Buckers’ Blue Magic to 86 points and Chase Dougherty caught a fifth place cheque in round six with an 85.5 mark on Big Stone Rodeo’s Cherry Bomb. Wayne Vold Rodeo’s Haunted Hotel and Duane Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Alberta Prime Devils Advocate and Rodger’s Red Angus Chester all deposited cowboys on the Thomas and Mack Arena dirt before the eight second horn.

At the other end of the arena, a trio of Canadian horses have made their mark at this NFR. Tanner Milan’s award-winner Eddie is partnering with Scott Guenthner in the Steer Wrestling. On the other side of the box is hazer, Milan, on his 2024 Canadian Hazing Horse of the Year, Tree Stump. And Logan Bird’s three-time Canadian Tie-Down Roping Horse of the Year, Peso, has carried the Harris brothers, Ty and Joel, to a round win each.

Round 6 – Guenthner Earns the Victory Lap!

Hot Dog–gin

It’s been a tale of two Finals for legendary Canadian steer wrestler Scott Guenthner.

After struggles through the first three rounds of the 2024 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo, the four-time Canadian Champion has been lights out through the next three with a third, a split of 2/3 and tonight, an outstanding 3.8 second run for the go-round win. The $33,687 first-place cheque brings Guenthner’s total NFR earnings to $77,155. Not bad for the man who had not expected to be at the 2024 NFR at all. The five time NFR qualifier has now climbed all the way to 8th place in the world standings.

In the saddle bronc riding, it was CPRA horses and CPRA cowboys who were in the spotlight tonight. On the stock side it was a 2/3 split—Brody Cress on Macza Pro Rodeo’s Squash Blossom Steely Dan and Wyatt Casper on OLS Tubs Little Muffin from Outlaw Buckers with both rides earning 86.5 points from the judges. And on the cowboy side, it was Casper who was outstanding at our recently completed CFR  (he finished 2nd in Canada for 2024), and Zeke Thurston who is vying for a fifth world title and was fourth in tonight’s round for an important $14,127 cheque while Logan Hay and Kolby Wanchuk were part of a three-way split of sixth for $1358 each.

The world title race just keeps getting tighter. The way it sits right now, Ryder Wright is atop the standings at $357,796 with season leader, Damien Brennan in second spot at $332,68 and Thurston next at $320,001 with Wyatt Casper rounding out the top four at $312,552.

Which takes us to the all-important and hugely lucrative aggregate( $86,391 to win first) where Casper sits in top spot with 513.5/6, Thurston is next at 511.5/6, then comes Dawson Hay with 510./6 and Brennan at 509.5/6. The problem for Wright is that he’s down in ninth spot in the aggregate with 436/5.

And in the tie-down roping, two-time and reigning Canadian Champion Haven Meged, like Scott Guenthner, was having a tough time in the early rounds of this NFR. The Miles City, Montana superstar who won a world title in 2019 got things turned around last night with a solid money run and totally righted the ship with a vintage Haven Meged moment to win round six with a flawless 6.9 second run.

Texas barrel racer Tiany Schuster, who just a few weeks ago was at the Canadian Finals Rodeo, has had an impressive showing at the Thomas and Mack Arena. She’s been a picture of consistency placing in three rounds and has moved to 3rd in the aggregate. But two amazing cowgirls and their horses have stolen the show in 2024. Four-time Champion Hailey Kinsel who, aboard the amazing Sister, is on target for another World title while Kassie Mowry has won the last three go rounds, including tonight’s sixth round with a blistering 13.25 on Jarvis, fastest time so far at this year’s WNFR.

Round 5 – A Night When NFR Stars Shone Bright

Go Round number five of the 2024 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo was a night that saw amazing performances from some of the greatest animal athletes in the world. And it pretty much started right after the grand entry with the bareback riding – that was absolutely as advertised. It was Canada’s much celebrated F13 Virgil from the C5 Rodeo Company that added another impressive moment to one of the greatest rodeo resumes ever produced by a bucking horse. This time it was Jacob Lees, a Caldwell, Idaho cowboy who benefitted from riding the reigning Canadian Bareback Horse of the Year as he split the round with 91 points on the great gray.

* more about Virgil at the NFR here in Tim Ellis’ RAM Rodeo Report

Four-time Canadian Champion steer wrestler, Scott Guenthner, made it two nice paydays in a row as he put together a 3.9 second run to catch third place in the round. Guenthner, at his fifth NFR, cashed to the tune of $20,104, to bring his winnings total to $43,468 after some early struggles at the Thomas and Mack Arena. Here again it was an amazing horse that played a big part in the Guenthner success—Tanner Milan’s Eddie, a gelding that has won both CPRA and PRCA best bulldogging horse honours.

On a night when the pen of saddle broncs was as good as there is in the sport, the Canadian cowboy connection did not get to the pay window. A couple of American CPRA athletes, Zachary Dallas and Wyatt Casper (both qualifiers for the 2024 CFR) split fifth place with 85 point rides. Four-time World Champion Zeke Thurston was out of the money for the second night in a row and saw his lead at the top of the aggregate standings evaporate as he now sits in a tie for third in the aggregate with the man he’s chasing—season leader Damian Brennan. Casper leads the aggregate with Dawson Hay in second place. Zeke Thurston remains solidly in third place in the World standings behind Ryder Wright and Damien Brennan at the half-way point.

And in the tie-down roping, it was horsepower again that factored into the winning run. Three-time and reigning tie-down horse of the year, Peso, carried Texas roper, Joel Harris, to the winner’s circle courtesy of a 7.6 second run.

It was the second go-round win in five rounds on Logan Bird’s talented buckskin—the previous victory in round three for the older Harris brother, 2022 Canadian Champion, Ty. Two-time Canadian Champion and 2019 World titleist, Haven Meged, who had been shut out through the first four rounds picked up his first cheque of the Finals with an 8.0 second run, good for the runner-up spot in the round.

And in the bull riding on Night 5, Season Leader T.J. Gray rode 2023 Bull of the CFR – Outlaw Buckers’ Blue Magic to 86 points and 2nd place in a round where only three bulls were ridden. This bull came from the Baird family in Halkirk, AB. (The boys are excited. TJ Baird would be proud.)

Dec 8 – WNFR Round 4 Highlights

Guenthner Gets it Going

It had been a frustrating first three rounds at the 2024 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo for a four-time Canadian Champion, but that came to an end in round four. The Provost, Alberta steer wrestler made a Scott Guenthner run for a 3.7 second time to split 2/3 and pick up his first cheque—a tidy $23,364. Guenthner was riding Tanner Milan’s 2023 World and Canadian Steer Wrestling Horse of the Year, Eds Famous Bar (aka Eddie). And there was another CPRA connection in the dogging tonight—the man who won the round with a 3.6, one-tenth of a second faster than Guenthner, was two-time CFR qualifier, JD Struxness.

After three straight go round wins that have moved him from 6th place to 2nd in the world standings, Zeke Thurston, the Big Valley, Alberta superstar bronc rider who is seeking a fifth World title did not place in the round. Still, his 80.5 score kept him in top spot in the all-important aggregate. To put it in perspective, only three men in history have five titles—Dan Mortenson and Casey Tibbs with six and Billy Etbauer with five. That is some kind of elite company Zeke Thurston is seeking to be part of.

Elsewhere in the bronc riding, Wyatt Casper who was at this year’s CFR and finished fifth overall in the Canadian standings was second tonight. The Texas hand was 87.5 for $26,624. Brody Wells picked up a fourth-place cheque with 86 points on the Calgary Stampede bronc, Yesterday’s Delivery and Canadian cowboy Dawson Hay was fifth, courtesy of an 85 point effort on another Calgary horse, Annual News. And from annual news to bad news, still another Calgary horse, Freedom Express deposited Dawson’s brother Logan in the Thomas and Mack dirt before the eight second horn in Round 4.

In Bareback Riding, 2022 CFR qualifier, Leighton Berry, collected his first cheque of the NFR, also splitting 2/3 with an 86.5-point ride while Weston Timberman rode Macza Pro Rodeo’s Side Show to fifth place with 85.5 points

The team roping had a couple of guys with the CPRA on their resume. Heeler Hunter Koch, the 2019 Canadian Champion and his partner Cody Snow were one of four teams to split first in the fourth round, all with 4.1 second times, while the fifth place team of Erich Rogers and Paul Eaves checked in at 4.3 seconds. Eaves was the Canadian champion heeler in 2012.

Duane Kesler Championship Rodeo showed us some bull power as the 2022 Canadian Bull of the Year, Alberta Prime Devil’s Advocate, was as tough as ever, bucking off NFR rookie Wacey Schalla in short order.

CPRA Excellence in WNFR Round Three

Round 3 (Dec 7) of the 2024 edition of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo had a distinctly CPRA feel to it. Nowhere was that more in evidence than in the tie-down roping where the 2022 Canadian Champion, Ty Harris turned in the first sub seven second run in the tie-down roping—a 6.9 second $33,687 run–and he did it on the three time Canadian Tie-down Roping Horse of the year—Logan Bird’s brilliant buckskin, Peso. Then just to keep it in the family, the younger Harris brother, Joel, posted a 7.3 second run for third place in the round, also on Peso. And the man in between the brothers was the 2023 World Champion Riley Webb who won the first two rounds of this NFR. Webb was 7.1 on his run.

The elder Harris brother, from San Angelo, Texas made a horse change after night number one—making the move to Peso. “I’m so thankful for that horse; Logan Bird let me on Peso,” Harris acknowledged. “He makes it so easy. We didn’t get a good start last night but worked out some kinks this morning.”  The round win had Harris in third place in the world standings. (quote courtesy of The Cowboy Channel)

And, another big win for Zeke Thurston. The Big Valley, Alberta bronc rider is vying for a fifth world title which would match the number of Canadian Championships he’s won. Tonight at the Thomas and Mack Arena, Thurston won his second first place cheque in three rounds as he rode Powder River Rodeo’s Miss Valley to 88 points. The win vaulted him to over $300,000 in season earnings and he now sits second overall, less than $1500 behind season leader Damian Brennan.

Another Canadian, Kolby Wanchuk enjoyed a successful night as well as he put up an 86 point ride to split 2/3/4 in the go round for a $20,285 payday. And the Calgary Stampede’s outstanding bronc, Wild Cherry, carried Kade Bruno, to an 85 and a split of fifth place in the round.

A couple of Canadian bareback horses figured prominently in the bareback riding on night number three. Cooper Cooke made a terrific ride on Calgary’s Born Fearless for a second place 88 points with Cole Franks spurring out an 87 pointer on Duane Kesler Championship Rodeo’s Hot Shot, good for third in the round. Both men were tucked in behind the 2022 World Champion, Jess Pope who took home the first-place money with an 89.5.

It’s been a struggle for the two guys with a Rodeo Canada connection in the steer wrestling. Reigning Canadian Champion, Dalton Massey and four-time Canadian titleist, Scott Guenthner have yet to cash a cheque.

And in the bull riding tonight, the Wayne Vold Rodeo bull, Haunted Hotel, made short work of rookie bull rider, Wacey Schalla.

Dec 6 – Round Two Highlights – In the Spotlight at the WNFR

Night number two of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo saw several CPRA athletes, some two-legged and a couple of the four-legged variety take their place in the spotlight at the Thomas and Mack Arena.

It started in the bareback riding where Wayne Vold’s long-time star, True Grit, carried Bradlee Miller to 86.5 and the go-round win. The 2013 Canadian Champion bareback horse was on her game on this night, resulting in a $33,687 payday for the Huntsville, Texas cowboy, moving him to third place overall with defending Champion Keenan Hayes in top spot.

NFR Rd 2 Win – Bradlee Miller 86.5 on Wayne Vold Rodeo’s 197 True Grit

In the bronc riding a couple of Canadian superstars had solid performances on a Friday night. Dawson Hay checked in with a sensational 87 point ride on Pete Carr Rodeo’s Toma Joe for a second place cheque of $26,624 while Zeke Thurston posted his second 86.5 score in a row, this one on the Calgary Stampede’s outstanding Erotic Tango, for a split of third and a $17,115 payday. And while we’re only two performances into the ten round Finals, it’s worth noting that Thurston and Hay are 1 and 2 in the all-important and very lucrative aggregate. Thurston, vying for a fifth world title, held his spot in the overall standings as he continues to occupy third place on that world standings leaderboard.

Dec 5 – Round One Highlights – Zeke Thurston Does it Again

The things you can count on in life.

The fresh smell of new mown hay, the love of a loyal dog, the often-told stories of your grandpa. Oh, and there’s one more. It’s Zeke Thurston in the bronc riding.

The four-time World Champion who won his fifth consecutive Canadian title just a few weeks ago started the 2024 Wrangler National Finals Rodeo about the way you’d expect with a go-round win on Frontier Rodeo’s Coffee Yellowstone. The pride of Big Valley, Alberta was 86.5 points for the $33,687 first place cheque to move from 6th to 3rdplace in the world standings and cut a big chunk out of the margin season leader Damian Brennan held going in. Brennan was out of the money in the first round.

Another Canadian, Dawson Hay, picked up a third place, $20,104 cheque with his effort on Brookman Rodeo’s Ragin Lunatic.

The steer wrestling was the other side of the coin for a couple of cowboys with CPRA roots. Four-time Canadian Champion Scott Guenthner was the first man out and took a no time. And the last man in the field, this year’s Canadian Champion and world season leader, Dalton Massey, duplicated the Guenthner misfortune with a no-time of his own. That opened the door for Will Loomis and the Vihalia, Mississippi veteran put up a 3.7 for the round win.

Earlier in the week, as the 2025 Breakaway Roping season wrapped up on the world stage, it was Oklahoma cowgirl Kelsie Domer who roped her way to both the NFR aggregate and the 2024 World titles with a stellar performance in Las Vegas to seal the deal. Domer won $34,221 at the South Point Arena and Equestrian Center over the two days and ten rounds of competition en route to a final season total of $168,758 and her first PRCA/NFR title.

A couple of cowgirls with CPRA connections were factors in the final BAW outcome. 2024 title-holder Shelby Boisjoli-Meged, one of two Canadian born-and-raised competitors, came into the Finals in top spot and earned $12,564 in Las Vegas to wrap up her season in fourth place with $160,729. Meanwhile, two-time Canadian Champion, Shelby Pierson, competing at her second NFR, collected $10,078 and finished up in 13th place overall with total earnings of $99,137.

The two-day BAW Finals (Dec 3-4) was the kick-off to the ten day Wrangler National Finals Rodeo Dec 5-14 at the Thomas and Mack Arena in Las Vegas, NEV.

LEAD-UP to the NATIONAL FINALS RODEO by Tim Ellis

Dec 4, 2024 – A lot has changed both inside and outside of the rodeo arena for world champion bronc rider, Zeke Thurston, since his first appearance at the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo. That first trip came back in 2015, Thurston’s rookie year in the PRCA.

“I don’t know if I really enjoyed that first one that much,” reveals the 30-year-old. “You put a lot of pressure on yourself to show that you belong there and do well. It’s a rollercoaster of a week and it all happens really fast. I really try to just take it all in now and enjoy it. It’s a lot of fun now to make those memories with my family.”

Which brings us to the changes outside of the arena.

“It was just me and Jayne, we weren’t even married back then.” recalls Thurston of his first trips to Las Vegas for the NFR. “I was never a huge partier but we’d do couple’s things. We had no other responsibilities.”

“Now, we have to rent a four-thousand square-foot, Air B&B with a pool in the back yard to entertain the kids. But I have enjoyed it both ways. The more of them I get to, the more I appreciate them. I realize that just because you’ve been there doesn’t mean you’re going back the next year. So, when you do get there, it’s special.”

With his wife, Jayne and their three children, Lucy, Hardy and Maggie Mae, Thurston will travel to Vegas for his tenth consecutive NFR appearance, second only to Rod Hay’s 17 straight qualifications

between 1992-2008, when it comes to Canadian cowboys competing at the National Finals Rodeo.

“I’ve set some goals for myself throughout the years and to go to the NFR ten times was one of them,” offers the four-time world bronc riding champion. “To do it consecutively is pretty cool. I think I’ve got a few more left in me.”

Those probably aren’t the words his fellow bronc riders want to hear. You’d be hard pressed to find similar domination of an event as the Big Valley, AB, cowboy has demonstrated at the Thomas and Mack Center.

Only three men have won more world saddle bronc gold buckles than Thurston – Casey Tibbs (6), Dan Mortensen (6) and Billy Etbauer (5). Mortensen was the last to win three straight titles (1993-95), which Thurston has a chance to accomplish this year. He’s won the NFR average title the past two years and could join neighbor, Rod Warren as the only bronc rider to win three consecutive average titles. He’s placed in 51 of 90 rounds at the Finals, including 41 of the last 60, while collecting over 1.2-million dollars inside the Thomas and Mack over his nine appearances.

Joining Thurston is Las Vegas are fellow Canadian bronc riders, Dawson and Logan Hay, Ben Andersen and Kolby Wanchuk. They bring a combined thirteen NFR qualifications with them.

“I’m more excited this year than in any other year,” affirms the younger Hay brother, who has now qualified for the NFR in five of the last six years. “I’ve got to ride there before with my brother (2022) and then with my cousin, Ben (2021, 23), but this will be the first year we all get to compete there together.”

“Just looking back to the practice pen in Rimbey and practicing at our house (Wildwood), for us to be walking through the doors of the Thomas and Mack together is beyond special for me. It’s also pretty special to see the consistency of all the Canadian bronc riders and how proud I am to a part of this generation of bronc riders.”

It’s the second time in Las Vegas for older brother, Logan.

“Any time you make the NFR, it’s special. There’s not one that’s just a given,” offers Hay, who needed a couple of cheques on the final weekend of the PRCA’s regular season to qualify. “Shoot, this year I came out of the winter run 5th in the world and thought I could cruise the rest of the way. Then stuff happens and I’m waiting on the very last ride of the season to see if I make it. It was stressful.”

Wanchuk used a hot streak in July to help him find his way to his 3rd NFR appearance.

“It was probably the best couple of weeks I’ve had in rodeo,” suggests the 28-year-old, who finished 11th in the world standings. “Anyone in the top fifty can win a rodeo if they have the right horse. Finding a way to place without the good draws is the key.”

“The second time I went (to the NFR), I took better care of myself. I’ve learned how to keep my body in top shape which helps your mind as well. You just try to go in there with all the confidence and strength you can.”

Rounding out the Canadian cowboy contingent is steer wrestler, Scott Guenthner. Yes, the same Scott Guenthner who announced after the 2021 NFR that he would curtail his rodeo schedule in the U.S.

“This was definitely not on my radar at the start of the season,” confirms Guenthner, who went to just two winter rodeos (Houston, San Antonio) and just twenty-two U.S. rodeos all season. “Winning the NFR Open changed my outlook. I was in the top-15 in the middle of August so I made the decision to try one more time.”

The $13,000 cheque from the NFR Open combined with another $13,000-plus won after September 1st, including $3,600 on the final weekend of the PRCA regular season, was enough for Guenthner to finish in the 15th and secure a spot at his fifth NFR.

Also heading to Vegas next week is defending World Breakaway Roping Champion Shelby Boisjoli-Meged. Originally from Alberta, Meged makes her home state-side with husband and two time Canadian Tie-Down Champion, Haven Meged. Shelby, who is ranked #1 in the world standings heading into the NFR will be joined for the second year by fellow Canadian, Kendal Pierson of Wardlow, AB. Pierson, secured her Finals BAW spot (11th overall) in part with a round two win at the Cinch Playoffs-Governor’s Cup in Sioux Falls, SD (2.1 secs for $11,000) a big step in her march to the 2024 WNFR.
