Bouncing Back: Cassidy Splits Round 7 of #WranglerNFR

Curtis Cassidy - 2014
LAS VEGAS, NV
-- December 10, 2014 -- Curtis Cassidy bounced back in Round 7 of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo to split the win with Nevada native Dakota Eldridge.

On Wednesday in Round 7, Eldridge and Cassidy both registered times of 3.4 to win $17,010 each.
“I had a decent steer, Casey Martin threw that steer in 3.7 the other night,” Cassidy said. “I got a great start here tonight, that steer stopped right there and I was lucky to keep a hold of him. Sometimes those stoppers will suck back there away from you, luckily this steer jumped forward a little as I was catching him. He jumped by me and hit. I didn’t know how fast I was but I knew I was so close to the chute so it had to be fairly fast.”

A time of 9.0 seconds plus a broken barrier left Cassidy out of the money in Round 6 after winning the round outright on Monday night in Round 5 in a quick 3.3.

“Last night felt good. The chiropractor and the vet have been working on my horse. He’s so much sharper the last few nights. The steer didn’t leave real good last night, I got off the back too sharp. It was a bad combination of both. The start is so crucial here,” Cassidy said. “The first few go rounds I was struggling to get close to the barrier. Now it’s the opposite. He’s leaving so hard, I need to almost back off my start a hair. To even have a snowball chance in hell of winning a gold buckle I need to go at them every night and win go rounds.”

For as many ups and downs as there have been for the ten-time Canadian Champion the past week inside the Thomas & Mack, his attitude remains steady.

“You have to shake it off, it’s a new day,” Cassidy said. “You have to come with a positive mind frame every day and go at them. That’s all you can do. You have to keep going at them every day and hopefully the drawing gods are there with you too.”
The Donalda, Alberta man now has earned $43,981 in Las Vegas to move his season earnings up past the $100,000 mark. Sitting fifth in the world standings, he trails world leader Luke Branquinho by $37,200. Branquinho leads the aggregate that Cassidy sits eighth in.

Jake Vold finished 12th this evening after a score of 76 on Hollywood Hills, the horse of the night from Butler & Sons. Vold dropped three spots in the aggregate tonight to sixth with 563 points on seven head.

Dustin Flundra also finished out of the money in Round 7 with a score of 73 points. Flundra’s score in a tough pen of horses moved him up in the aggregate to sixth place, which would pay him an additional $11,953 if it held up until Saturday’s Round 10.
